Oilers vs Stars Prediction, Picks & Odds for Today’s NHL Game

The Oilers have put the best with the best and hoped for the best, and that's what they've gotten so far with Leon Draisaitl back on the top line with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman. Look for Draisaitl to keep dishing out assists.

The Edmonton Oilers have rebounded nicely following a slow start to the season, picking up back-to-back wins over Philadelphia and Nashville.

My Oilers vs. Stars predictions see the road team building on this recent momentum, with Leon Draisaitl leading the charge offensively.

Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for October 19.

My Oilers analysis

Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch recently promoted Leon Draisaitl to the top line with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman in an effort to create a spark and jumpstart the offense. It paid immediate dividends.

The Oilers won both games since reuniting Draisaitl and McDavid, scoring eight goals in aggregate. Draisaitl recorded points on three of them and assisted in both games.

That’s a huge step in the right direction after the Oilers scored just three goals over their first three games of the season, all of which were losses.

Draisaitl is a dangerous playmaker with anybody, but he clearly hits another gear when skating with McDavid and Hyman.

He has averaged 2.40 assists per 60 minutes of 5v5 play with those linemates over the past two seasons. Forget goals for a moment — producing 2.40 total points per 60 minutes is top-tier. And that’s just Draisaitl’s assist rate.

Factor in he touches the puck a ton on a historically good Oilers power play and the opportunities to record assists are endless. Draisaitl is truly surrounded by the best of the best in every game state.

Although the Dallas Stars are off to a strong 4-1 start, they have been surprisingly susceptible to giving up quality looks.

They rank 20th in high-danger chances against at 5v5 and 27th in expected goals against on a per minute basis.

They still have some kinks to work out defensively and I expect Draisaitl to make them pay.

Oilers vs Stars same-game parlay (SGP)

Leon Draisaitl Over 0.5 assists

Zach Hyman Over 0.5 points

Roope Hintz Under 2.5 shots

Hyman strongly correlates with Draisaitl now that they’re on the same line at 5v5 as well as on the power play.

Hyman is a high-motor player who does a lot of the dirty work. Whether it’s winning pucks back for Draisaitl and McDavid or banging in loose change around the net, Hyman has a lot of different avenues to hitting the scoresheet.

Roope Hintz doesn’t generate many shots at the best of times. He’s averaged just 3.7 attempts over his past 30 games, hitting the target 1.7 times per game during that span.

He has attempted five shots or fewer in four of five games this season. Dating back to last season, he has cleared 2.5 shots in just four of the last 30 tries when generating five attempts or fewer.

It’s going to be tough for Hintz to create volume against Edmonton. Even in defeat, the Oilers have done a great job of limiting shots. They rank second in attempts against and third in shots allowed at 5v5.
