Rangers vs Hurricanes Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Cagey Affair Leads to Minimal Scoring

The Rangers hold a four-point lead in the Metro Division over the Hurricanes, so this game will go a long way into deciding who ends up winning it. With so much on the line, our NHL picks expect a cagey affair with goals few and far between.

The two top teams in the Metropolitan Division meet tonight with the Carolina Hurricanes hosting the New York Rangers at PNC Arena. The Rangers are underdogs on the NHL odds board after beating the Devils last night.

The Hurricanes are red-hot right now with three straight wins and five wins in their last six games. In fact, Carolina is 11-3-1 in its last 15 games with a goal differential of 51-30. New York hit a bit of a rough patch a few weeks ago with a 1-2-1 stretch but it's still 13-2-1 over the last 16 outings.

Can Carolina pick up a crucial two points at home? Find out in my free NHL picks for the Rangers vs. Hurricanes on Tuesday, March 12.

Rangers vs Hurricanes predictions

The Carolina Hurricanes were one of the big winners at the NHL trade deadline. They added winger Jake Guentzel and center Evgeny Kuznetsov to bolster their previously lackluster offense.

Those additions helped the Hurricanes sweep a weekend back-to-back against the Devils (4-2) and Flames (7-2). Sebastian Aho led the way, though, with the Hurricanes’ star picking up three assists in Sunday’s win.

The New York Rangers also made a few additions of their own, even if they weren’t as notable. They picked up some depth forwards in Jack Roslovic and Alex Wennberg to round out their lines with Chad Ruhwedel adding a physical presence on the back end.

Mika Zibanejad helped the Rangers take down the Devils last night but he knows the Hurricanes pose a tough challenge.

"There's another big game coming up tomorrow against Carolina, a team that we're battling for that spot," he said. "It's going to be a tough game and a good challenge."

Perhaps the good news for the Rangers is they saved starting goalie Igor Shesterkin for tonight. Shesterkin has been stellar since the All-Star break, going 7-1-1 with just 13 goals against in nine indoor games. He allowed five goals in the Stadium Series game, which didn’t do any favors for any of the goaltenders in net.

The Hurricanes also now have two steady goalies in net after the return of Frederik Andersen. He’s allowed three goals in two starts since returning from a blood clot issue, and Pyotr Kochetkov (17-11-3, 2.39 GAA, .910 SV%) has proven that he can hold his own as well.

Goaltending is going to be key in this battle for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. While there were seven goals in the last meeting, three of them came as the Hurricanes piled on in the third period. Prior to that, these teams battled to 2-1 decisions in two straight matchups with a 3-2 final in there as well.

Take the Under tonight between two teams that don’t give up much defensively.

My best bet: Under 6 (-125 at bet365)

Rangers vs Hurricanes same-game parlay

Under 5.5

Hurricanes moneyline

The Under 6.0 is our best bet for tonight’s game but I’m willing to take it down to Under 5.5 for the same-game parlay. This should be a tight-checking, hard-fought game between two teams at the top of the Metro.

The Rangers have gone Under 5.5 in two straight games and five of their last nine overall, with the Hurricanes also trending that way against tougher opponents. Carolina skated to 1-0 and 2-1 finals against the Panthers and Stars in recent weeks.

I'm also going to go with the Hurricanes here at home. Under normal circumstances, this would be a much tougher game to handicap. However, Carolina is home after the Rangers battled against the Devils last night in New York. The rest advantage should be big tonight for a team like the Canes that thrives off the forecheck.
