The Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers face off on Thursday night in a Western Conference clash. These teams were separated by just one point last season as both teams had impressive campaigns.

This is a bit of a tough spot for the Stars in the NHL odds as they played on Wednesday night in Calgary. Meanwhile, the Oilers have had a few days off after beating the Flames in the Heritage Classic on Sunday night.

Who will take home two points in this Western Conference matchup? Read on for our free NHL picks for Stars vs. Oilers below.

Stars vs Oilers predictions

Connor McDavid returned for the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday and contributed an assist in the 5-2 win over the Flames. He now has a point in all six games he’s played this season with nine in total.

The Heritage Classic win could be a building block for Edmonton.

"For the team to get two points was important for us," coach Jay Woodcroft said. "Something to build on.

The Oilers have had a bit of tough luck to begin the season. Despite boasting the league’s second-best xGF% at 5-on-5 (57.25%), Edmonton has just two wins to show for it.

It doesn’t help that McDavid missed two games and the Oilers have played some tough competition. That one team that’s been better than the Oilers, though? The Dallas Stars. They lead the league with a 58.37% xGF at 5-on-5 play.

The good news for the Oilers is that the Stars started Vezina Trophy candidate Jake Oettinger on Wednesday night. That means it’ll be Scott Wedgewood (1-1-0, 3.54 GAA, .889 SV%) in Edmonton on Thursday.

On top of that, the Stars exerted a lot of energy on Wednesday night in Calgary as the Flames fought all the way down to the final horn in a physical affair.

Edmonton is in a great spot here to string two wins together and get things going in the right direction after a rough start to the season. Back McDavid & Co. at home against a tired Stars team.

Stars vs Oilers same-game parlay

Oilers -1.5

First-period Over 1.5

Connor McDavid anytime goal

While the Oilers on the moneyline is the best bet, I’m willing to go with them on the puck line to kick off our parlay.

Edmonton only has two wins on the season but both of them have been of the blowout variety. The Oilers beat the Predators 6-1 early in the season and then beat the Flames 5-2 on Sunday night.

Wedgewood starting for the Stars also gives me a decent bit of confidence in the puck line. The veteran backup only has a SV% of .907 in his career and he's allowed seven goals on 63 shots this season against the Flyers and Leafs.

We’re also adding the first period Over 1.5 along with the puck line to continue the parlay.

The Oilers have outscored opponents 12-9 in the first period (eight games) while the Stars have been outscored 8-4 in their eight first periods thus far. Four of those 12 first-period goals in Stars games came in Wedgewood’s start against the Flyers last month.

Finally, we’re going with McDavid to score to close out the parlay. The Oilers superstar only has two goals through six games and should be able to pot one against Wedgewood tonight.

Stars vs Oilers moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Oilers are still available at -130 at SIA but the line has moved up a bit at other books. Edmonton is as high as -146 favorites after opening at -130. In turn, the Stars can now be found as high as +122 after opening at +110.

The total opened at 6.5 and it remains there across the board. The Over 6.5 is slightly favored at -115 while the Under 6.5 is at -105.

Edmonton has to be the side to bet on tonight and that correlates with the Over. The Oilers have broken out for a few blowout wins this season and a game against a tired Stars team with Wedgewood in net is the perfect recipe for that tonight.
