Flames vs Blues Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

The Flames are playing strong hockey of late, ripping a ton of shots on goal, which will cause problems for the Blues, especially if they draw penalties. St. Louis is scoring with relative ease as well, and Calgary will turn to Dan Vladar in net.

The Calgary Flames are riding a three-game winning streak that has seen them jump back into a playoff spot. They’ll attempt to make it four tonight against a St. Louis Blues squad nipping at their heels in the wild-card race.

My Flames vs. Blues predictions see history repeating itself with another high-scoring game between two sides who’ve played in a lot of them against one another.

Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for Tuesday, January 14 at St. Louis' Enterprise center at 8 p.m. ET.

My Flames analysis

This game has the makings of a sneaky high-scoring affair.

The Calgary Flames have quietly upped the ante offensively, ranking 14th in expected goals generated at 5-on-5 over the last 10 games, well above their season ranking of 22nd.

Calgary has also done a remarkably good job of controlling the run of play, sitting third in 5-on-5 shot share during that span.

The Flames aren’t loaded with high-end finishers so they need volume if they’re going to score. Luckily, getting the bulk of the chances hasn’t been a problem of late.

They also have a fantastic power-play matchup in this game. The St. Louis Blues rank 28th in shot suppression on the kill over the past 10 games and they’ve hovered around a 60 PK% in that span, last in the NHL.

If the Blues get into any sort of penalty trouble, they’re going to have a tough time killing them off against a Flames team that ranks 13th in expected goal generation on the PP the past 10 games.

On the flip side, the Blues have been quite prolific offensively. They have scored at least four goals in seven of their past nine, including in a pair of losses. Regardless of the result, they seem to have found a formula for filling the net.

The Flames will struggle to limit the Blues. They’re in the latter half of a road back-to-back and will not have Dustin Wolf available. That’s certainly important as he’s played so well that he is firmly in the mix for the Calder.

Eight of the past 10 games between these sides have featured six goals or more, including their only meeting this season back in December.

Flames vs Blues same-game parlay (SGP)

Over 5.5

Flames team total Over 2.5

Blues team total Over 2.5

The Blues will start Jordan Binnington, who has posted an .896 save percentage since November 30, allowing nearly four goals more than expected in that span.

Calgary beat Binnington three times in the previous meeting. With the Flames generating shots at a healthy clip, and the Blues struggling on the penalty kill, there’s a nice path to three goals once again.

Dan Vladar has allowed at least three goals in six of his past seven games. I don’t see him slowing down a Blues offense that is firing on all cylinders right now.
