The NHL continues to blow it in terms of scheduling, with a 13-game-to-two-game schedule. As a result, there are not many NHL player props to consider tonight on a tough card to decipher.
The Sabres will hopefully shoot the puck more after a collapse to the Kraken, while the Wild will continue to be short-handed.
These are my favorite NHL picks for each game on Wednesday, January 15.
NHL prop picks and best bets for January 15
- Dahlin Over 2.5 SOG (+130 at bet365)
- Hyman + Nugent-Hopkins Over 0.5 points each (+160 at bet365)
Picks made on 1-15 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
Today’s NHL prop picks and best bets
Prop bet #1: Rasmus Dahlin Over 2.5 shots on goal
The Buffalo Sabres spent Tuesday’s practice getting the puck to the net and “acting on shooting opportunities,”.
This is on the heels of a collapse to the Kraken, and a point in the Buffalo offense coach Lindy Ruff is trying to correct ahead of tonight’s game vs. Dustin Tokarski and the Hurricanes.
That focus on practice yesterday should translate to more shots on net for the Sabres, and although the Canes are not the best SOG matchup, they are more accommodating on the road.
Rasmus Dahlin gets pucks on the net on home ice.
The Buffalo defender’s splits are wild for shots on net. At home, he averages 3.23 shots per game compared to just 2.4 on the road. He is +130 to get 3+ SOG tonight which is a mark he has gone Over 11 times in his last 14 home games. The Hurricanes’ shot suppression is certainly priced in already.
Tage Thompson is the highest-volume shooter on this team, but 4+ shots vs. the Canes is asking a lot. It’s Dahlin for me tonight on this increased-shooting angle.
Prop bet #2: Zach Hyman + Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Over 0.5 points each
The Wild will still be without Brock Faber, Kirill Kaprizov, and Jakub Lauko. Jared Spurgeon and Jonas Brodin are also out, leaving Minnesota shorthanded on the blue line yet again.
The Wild’s depth on defense makes them a great spot to fade and get some point props on the Edmonton Oilers' secondary players.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman have been finding the scoresheet and are +160 to each record a point. They are playing all their shifts with Connor McDavid, which is a great place to be.
Hyman has pointed in 14 of his last 18 games, and this stack has hit in eight of the last 14 games. The pair did spend some time apart over that stretch, but the power play is also a good out for the double stack, as the Wild's PK has been a Bottom 10 unit over the last 30 days. I'd buy this to +140.
