The Winnipeg Jets host the Vancouver Canucks in a Western Conference clash at Canada Life Centre on Tuesday, January 14.

Winnipeg has allowed the second-fewest goals per game on home ice this season, and my Canucks vs. Jets predictions and NHL picks expect the Winnipeg defense and No. 1 goalie Connor Hellebuyck to lead the way in another low-scoring game tonight.

Jets vs Canucks prediction

My Jets pick
First period Under 1.5 (-116 at Pinnacle)

My Jets analysis
I was immediately drawn to the Under 5.5 goals, but the -129 vig is steep, and an empty-net goal or either team scoring with their goaltender pulled could be in play late.

As a result, I’m turning to the first-period Under because I’m anticipating both head coaches leaning on all four lines early Tuesday. Of course, both the Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets have correlated home-road splits to the Under, too.

Winnipeg has been a defensive juggernaut at the Canada Life Centre, and Vancouver has been nearly as impressive on the highway.

Jets  Jets (Home) Canucks  Canucks (Road)
Goals against per game 2.17 (2nd) 2.52 (3rd)
5-on-5 goals against per 60 1.43 (2nd) 1.97 (3rd)

Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck is also the betting favorite in the Vezina Trophy odds, and he’s posted a .931 SV% and 1.89 GAA with a league-high 16.17 goals saved above average across his 20 home games.

Add Winnipeg allowing the third-fewest goals in the first period in the NHL this season, and I’m expecting the first 20 minutes to fly by with a goal or fewer on the scoreboard tonight.

Jets vs Canucks odds analysis

There has been a small move to the Vancouver side of this moneyline at Pinnacle, with Winnipeg opening as a -162 favorite and trading at -155 as of Tuesday morning. With Winnipeg sporting a 16-4-3 home record and winning 54 of its last 89 games (+10.85 units / 8% ROI), I’m a little surprised to see so much love for the Canucks.

The Under 5.5 has taken enough action at Pinnacle to move off the opening -119 and steepen to -129. Vancouver has also played to the Under in 24 of its past 44 road games (+5.25 Units / 11% ROI).
