The New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers will duke it out Tuesday night in a battle between two excellent teams who find themselves in mid-season ruts.
The two sides have combined to win just nine of their past 20 games and are struggling to string together multiple wins in a row.
Let’s break things down further with my January 14 NHL picks.
Panthers vs Devils prediction
My best bet
Jesper Bratt Over 0.5 assists (-120 at bet365)
My analysis
Jesper Bratt has taken his playmaking to another level this season. He has 36 assists through 45 games, which puts him on track for 66 for an 82-game schedule. They haven’t just come in bunches, either.
He's recorded at least one assist in 64% of his games this season. He’s done his best work on home soil, where Sheldon Keefe can get Bratt and Jack Hughes on the ice in more favorable matchups.
His hit rate has soared to 77% when isolating home games. Bratt has recorded an assist in nine of the past 10 games in Newark, including against high-quality teams like the Capitals, Maple Leafs, Hurricanes, Kings, and Lightning.
I expect that to be the case again vs. the Florida Panthers. They're playing in the latter half of a road back-to-back and will be turning to Spencer Knight between the pipes.
Knight owns an .891 save percentage on the season and has allowed at least three goals in four of his last six starts. He faced just 21 shots in one of the exceptions, so that had more to do with his workload — or lack thereof — than lights-out goaltending.
The Panthers rank Bottom 10 in shots allowed per game and 27th in expected goals conceded this month. They're not defending to the level you’d expect.
They're also taking penalties at a very high clip and Bratt is a focal point on one of the league’s best power plays. There’s plenty of reason to believe Bratt’s playmaking success will continue tonight.
Panthers vs Devils same-game parlay (SGP)
Dougie Hamilton is really heating up offensively. He has recorded at least four shots in four of the past six games and has picked up points in three straight contests.
A lot of his damage is done on the power play, which sets up perfectly for him in this matchup. The Panthers are parading to the box at a near-unmatched rate, and Hamilton is a focal point of New Jersey’s power play.
Nearly half of his points have come on the man advantage while only Jack Hughes has taken more shots amongst Devils players.
