It’s a battle of two teams on the fringes of playoff positioning when the Montreal Canadiens visit the Utah Hockey Club.
Despite Montreal streaking and Utah sagging, the books like the home team tonight at the Delta Center, pegging Utah as a -155 favorite in the NHL odds. However, my Canadiens vs Utah Hockey Club predictions are looking elsewhere.
Our NHL picks see this as a great opportunity to pounce on the hotter team, with plus odds to boot, ahead of this 9 p.m. puck drop.

My Canadiens analysis
The extra-time magic for the Montreal Canadiens finally wore off Saturday, when they were dropped 2-1 in the shootout to the Dallas Stars. That marked an end to a nice three-game winning streak.
This is all part of a bigger surge for the Habs, who have lost just twice in regulation since mid-December, going 9-2-1.
This run has put them into the thick of the playoff chase, just two points back of Columbus, who currently hold the second and final wild-card spot.
Montreal is getting it done on both ends of the ice during the streak, ranking second in scoring at 3.58 goals per game, and third in goals against at 2.17.
The Utah Hockey Club have a little bit more work to do, sitting six points back of the Flames who hold the second and final spot in the West.
They’ve struggled of late, running a 2-6-2 record in their last 10, and at 6-9-4, they have the fewest home wins in the NHL.
Utah is struggling to light the lamp, tallying two goals or fewer in nine of its last 11, and will be without leading goal scorer Dylan Guenther, who is sidelined indefinitely due to a lower-body injury.
The only good news for the home team right now is that it owns the only win between the two franchises, a 3-2 OT win in Montreal on November 26.
Otherwise, this looks like a major mismatch. Montreal is surging and has won five of its last seven on the road.
Canadiens vs Utah Hockey Club same-game parlay (SGP)
For the first time in six games, Canadiens forward Cole Caufield was held off the scoresheet in the loss to Dallas. Before that, he had scored a goal in five straight.
The 24-year-old has seen his ice time jump by more than three minutes per game in January and it’s paying off, with four goals in five games, just one off his entire December total.
He’s been especially good on the road, with goals in four straight.
Let’s wrap with Nick Bjugstad’s shot total, at a gettable 1.5. The 32-year-old center didn’t register a shot in a loss to the Islanders last time out, but that’s been the outlier, as he had crossed this total the previous five games.
Bjugstad also registered two shots against the Habs in the previous meeting.
