Wild vs Red Wings Prediction, Picks & Odds for Saturday’s NHL Game

Both Minnesota and Detroit have been sagging when it comes to expected goals generated. The goaltending matchup also suggests we're in for a low-scoring second-half opener, per our NHL betting picks.

The NHL returns to action on Saturday following the highly successful 4 Nations Face-Off. Kicking off Saturday’s slate is a 12:30 p.m. ET game on ABC with the Detroit Red Wings hosting the Minnesota Wild at Little Caesars Arena.

NHL odds have this game listed as a pick’em, with the total set at 6. There have been six or fewer goals scored in six of Minnesota’s past seven games, and my Wild vs. Red Wings predictions and NHL picks for February 22 expect that trend to continue.

My analysis
A key factor behind the Minnesota Wild’s recent stretch of low-scoring games is their strong blue line, led by Brock Faber. He formed a strong defensive pair with Jaccob Slavin at the 4 Nations Face-Off and has helped Minnesota achieve the second-best xGA/60 rate in the NHL.

Backing up this strong blue line is goaltender Filip Gustavsson, who is slated to start in net for the Wild on Saturday. Gustavsson is 22-11-3 with a .915 SV% and 2.63 GAA through 37 starts this season.

Another reason for Minnesota’s recent low-scoring games is its lackluster offense. Failing to generate high-danger scoring chances at a high rate, the Wild rank 27th in xGF/60.

Their opponent faces a similar issue, as the Detroit Red Wings also rank in the bottom half of the league in xGF/60. The good news for Detroit is that goaltender Cam Talbot can help keep the team competitive against a struggling Minnesota offense.

Talbot is 16-11-2 through 31 appearances in the crease this season, posting a .905 SV% and 2.84 GAA. His success is likely to continue against Minnesota, a team against which he holds a .926 SV% through 16 career meetings.

Matt Boldy anytime goal

Wild moneyline

Even in a low-scoring affair, we could still see up to five goals in this game. I believe of those goals will come from Minnesota’s Matt Boldy, who enters this matchup fresh off his appearance in the 4 Nations Face-Off.

In his final game prior to the break, Boldy scored two goals against the New York Islanders. If he scores again, the Wild’s chances of winning increase, especially in a low-scoring game.

Minnesota holds the edge over Detroit in xGF% and possesses the stronger goaltender in this matchup.
