Blackburn vs Wrexham picks and predictions

Monday has just one FA Cup game but it’s a good one between the Blackburn Rovers and Wrexham. There’s no other game in this Fourth Round that has got so much interest around it despite not featuring a Premier League team. Blackburn are in the bottom half of the Championship and haven’t been in the Premier League for a generation, while Wrexham sit two leagues lower.

We’re all familiar now with the Wrexham fairytale. Actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney saw a good business opportunity in taking over the small Welsh club and trying to take them up the divisions to the Premier League. That’s still some way off but they’ve improved rapidly since the takeover and are now pushing to get promoted from League Two. Every step of the journey has been televised and now they’re hoping an FA Cup fairytale could light up their season’s script. I’m not confident we’ll see that and my best bet for the game is for Blackburn to win and Over 2.5 goals.

Firstly, let’s deal with why I expect Blackburn to win. They entered this weekend 17th in the Championship but in truth their season is probably already done. They’re too good to slump into the relegation zone, which is made up with some terrible teams, and very unlikely to be able to get into a race to finish in the playoff spots. They’re in a horrid vein for form, losing three of their last five and without a win in that span. Despite that, there is far more quality in their lineup than in that of Wrexham, despite the Welsh club having invested well.

My concerns around Wrexham generally stem from their defense. They may have entered the weekend second in League Two, having scored more than everyone bar two teams, but they’ve given up 37 goals in just 27 games. For context, that’s 10 more than top team Stockport and 15 more than Mansfield Town who are one spot below. A defense that weak is going to have serious issues against a team of Blackburn’s quality and that’s made all the more difficult by playing at Ewood Park.

I’m also backing Over 2.5 goals in the game. I think in all likelihood we’ll see Wrexham score, after all they’ve bagged 54 league goals this year and have the likes of Paul Mullin in their front line, who are better than the level they’re playing at. However, you can get marginally lower odds of +107 for the Blackburn win parlayed with Over 2.5 goals, and that gives us insurance in case we do see a strong performance from the home team’s defense.

Blackburn have the second highest amount of goals in the bottom half of the Championship and also feature the division’s top scorer. With that in mind, I think we’re going to see them put a lot of goals past Wrexham, ultimately securing them the win and covering our 2.5 goals in the process.

My best bet: Blackburn to win & Over 2.5 goals (+107 at TonyBet)

Blackburn vs Wrexham same-game parlay

Blackburn moneyline

Over 2.5

Sammie Szmodics to score

This is a +250 same-game parlay for Blackburn vs. Wrexham in the FA Cup that builds on our best bet for the game.

We are going to add Sammie Szmodics to score to our best bet of Blackburn to win and Over 2.5 goals, which creates a +250 same-game parlay. We’ve covered the best bet above but in short, I expect Blackburn’s quality to be the difference between the two teams and for their attack to do well against a Wrexham side better at going forward than protecting their goalkeeper.

Szmodics has been in incredible form for Blackburn Rovers this season and leads the Championship in goals scored. The 28-year-old has scored 16 goals in his 26 games, averaging 3.5 shots per game.

He generally plays just behind the front man, operating in the space created and then getting into positions to score. He’s a far better player than anyone Wrexham’s defense have faced so far and I expect him to score.

Blackburn vs Wrexham side and Over/Under analysis

Let’s take a look at the soccer odds between Blackburn and Wrexham. The home side are -149 favorites and as my best bet details, I expect them to win thanks to the quality they have in their lineup and the experience of playing at a higher level. If you think that Ryan Reynolds’ team can cause a huge upset you can get +335 on them winning or +320 on the draw.

I’m also confident we’re going to see lots of goals and Over 2.5 by itself comes in at -213 with the Under at +155. Both teams are high scorers and have attacking players amongst the best in their leagues, so we should see goals.
