Monday gives us a big Premier League game under the floodlights, with Chelsea and West Ham meeting in an all-London clash at Stamford Bridge.
Neither team is in great form and is desperate for an important win. However, our Chelsea vs. West Ham predictions have the visitors Mohammed Kudus managing to get a shot on target, with the team relying upon him.
Read on for my Premier League picks for Monday, February 3, with kickoff at 3:00 p.m. ET on USA Network.
Premier League predictions for Chelsea vs West Ham
My best bet:
Mohammed Kudus 1+ shot on goal (-134 at TonyBet)
My analysis
It isn’t often listed as one of England’s biggest derby games, but Chelsea vs West Ham is an underrated local rivalry, with two fanbases who hate each other.
Chelsea started the season excellently, but they’ve just one win in their past five Premier League games and are in danger of getting overtaken in the race to finish in the Champions League spots.
At times, Chelsea looks overly reliant on Cole Palmer, while their defense is giving up too many opportunities to the opposition, which bodes well for our best bet, for West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus to have one or more shots on target.
West Ham is under new management with Graham Potter installed, but they still have major injuries in attacking positions, with strikers Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug injured long-term and wide forwards Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville likely to just miss this game as they return from injuries.
That means West Ham’s attacking hopes are really relying on Lucas Paqueta and his teammate Kudus.
The Ghanian burst onto the scene in the Premier League last season after arriving in London from Ajax in Amsterdam and had a productive season, finishing with eight league goals and another six in other competitions.
He hasn’t quite hit those heights this season and has just three goals, all of which came in the Premier League.
However, with the injuries in attacking positions there’s now a bigger reliance on Kudus to be a goal threat. He ranks second in the West Ham team for shots on target behind the injured Bowen.
Kudus managed 15 shots on target in 18 games this season and is averaging 0.91 shots on target per 90 minutes. Interestingly, he’s only taken 30 shots in total this season, which means that an impressive 50% of his shots end up hitting the target.
With that in mind, we’re likely to see some positive regression and for Kudus to start scoring again soon.
Fortunately, he faces a Chelsea team who have conceded at least one goal in six straight Premier League games and who are allowing 11.1 shots per game.
Given the added responsibility upon his shoulders and the weaknesses in the Chelsea defense that he’s facing, we can expect the 24-year-old to get away plenty of shots.
Kudus is averaging 1.82 shots per 90 minutes played and should be able to get at least one on target here.
Chelsea vs West Ham same-game parlay (SGP)
For the Same-Game Parlay, we usually start with our best bet for the game. However, we can’t include Mohammed Kudus getting a shot on target in this SGP, so we’re upgrading it to the slighter larger odds that come with Kudus scoring in this game.
He played well against Aston Villa last week and will be hopeful he can end his scoring drought, especially given his added responsibilities in this team.
Our second leg is bad news for West Ham fans. Despite backing a Hammers player to score, we’re taking Chelsea to either win or get a draw. Chelsea are in contention for a Champions League spot with good reason, and with just five defeats all season, they have the third-best record in that respect.
Meanwhile, West Ham have either lost or drawn a huge 16 of their 23 goals. Given the difference in quality and depth, we should see Chelsea get something from this game.
The final leg in the Same-Game Parlay is for Chelsea to have Over 4.5 corners. We’ve seen Chelsea take an average of 5.96 corners per game this season. West Ham have also given up an average of 6.55 corners per game when they’ve been on their travels.
