England vs Ireland picks and predictions
My best bet:
England -2 (+179 at TonyBet)
My analysis
This is a game with a fierce rivalry, although the difference in quality between the teams has led it to be very one-sided one. That said, the traveling Irish fans will have Wembley rocking, and the atmosphere at the game in Dublin in September was a good one.
England know a win is likely to mean they top League B Group 2 thanks to the superior goal difference over Greece, who play Finland. There’s nothing the fans and players of Ireland would love more than to stop the party, but there’s very little chance of that.
England won just 2-0 at Aviva Stadium back in September, but they were in full control of the game, and Ireland didn’t really ever look like scoring. A lightning start from England saw them two goals up by 26 minutes before they took their foot off the accelerator.
The first-half performance was probably the best under Lee Carsley, and they ended up winning with 77% possession and having taken 16 shots, nine of which were on target. If it hadn’t been for Caoimhin Kelleher in goal, England would have won by a wider margin.
In many ways, it was a fairly weak England team, but it showed their strength in depth. The frustration of seeing some of their teammates pull out seemed to galvanize those who did play if comments from Kane and Jude Bellingham were anything to go by. We also saw other players, such as debutant Curtis Jones, seize their opportunity to impress in a game they’d not usually have started.
Sadly, Irish soccer is at a low point and they can’t compete with the best teams in the world, of which England are. The depth of skilled players in the England ranks has been highlighted, and Thursday’s cohesive performance is enough to show they should be able to do one better than they did back in September.
England vs Ireland same-game parlay (SGP)
We can’t put the handicap into the SGP, so we'll instead back England to win. We’ll add the Over 2.5 goals, believing that England will score at least three goals, as mentioned above.
Finally, we’re going to back Harry Kane to score. He was surprisingly benched against Greece but is expected to start against on Sunday. Given the amount of chances England created against the Greeks, we can expect Kane to score if he gets similar chances.
