Tottenham vs Manchester United picks and predictions
My best bet:
Manchester United (+170 at TonyBet)
My analysis
The most interesting EFL Cup matchup comes on Thursday with Spurs hosting Man Utd and both managers will be desperate to win for different reasons.
Ange Postecoglou is fighting for his job after a poor spell. That said, he has the backing of the board and knows that lifting this trophy would be a huge achievement given Spurs’ lack of hardware in recent seasons. For Ruben Amorim, Manchester United are too far behind in the league to get silverware but if he were to win a trophy in his first season, it would give him a lot of power heading into the summer transfer window.
We’re looking at recent form, which is why we’re backing Manchester United to get the win.
Since taking over for the sacked Erik ten Hag in November, Amorim has won four, drawn once, and lost twice. The team now plays Amorim’s favored 3-4-2-1 and has been far more attacking than anything under the previous manager.
Some players, like Amad Diallo, have emerged under Amorim. Diallo went from bit-player to one of the most exciting young stars in the English game. The Ivorian has been in incredible form and scored the winner when United beat local rivals and reigning champions Man City.
If the past month has shown improvement for Man Utd, the same can’t be said for Spurs, who come into this on the back of a 5-0 win over Southampton, the bottom team in the Premier League. They’d failed to win any of the previous five games before that.
Postecoglou is under pressure and his team is too inconsistent despite great attacking talent. This season we’ve seen Spurs beat both Man City and Aston Villa — tallying eight goals — in the Premier League, but in between those games, they lost to Galatasaray in Europe and Ipswich domestically.
Spurs have no consistency and are hampered by injuries, particularly at the back, where they’re without top goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, as well as Mickey van de Ven and Cristian Romero, leaving them open defensively.
Tottenham vs Manchester United same-game parlay (SGP)
Spurs have seen both teams scoring in 75% of their Premier League games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, including their past six. We’ve also seen both teams scoring in five of Amorim’s seven games in charge of the Man United.
Rasmus Hojlund has scored seven goals for Man Utd this season with five coming in the seven games since Amorim took over. Marcus Rashford appears to be sidelined, so Hojlund should get the start. It seems like he’s the preferred frontman and he’s thriving under the new manager.
