Wigan vs Man United Predictions and Picks: Red Devils Wallop Wigan

Man United will be massive favorites when they take on Wigan in the FA Cup, and our soccer betting picks do not sense the Red Devils have any difficulty scoring in this Monday matchup.

Wigan and Manchester United will renew acquaintances on Monday when the Red Devils visit DW Stadium for the third round of the FA Cup. Our FA Cup soccer betting odds show the visitors to be overwhelming favorites.

Wigan haven’t hosted Man United in a decade, back when they were a regular in the Premier League. They even won the FA Cup in 2013, but those seem like such distant days. They now sit in 17th place in League One, more than 40 places below Man United in the English football pyramid, after being relegated from the Championship last season.

Erik ten Hag will want to pursue a deep run in the FA Cup, as it presents the final possibility for hardware for his side. They’ve won the competition 12 times, trailing only Arsenal, and they’ll hope to enjoy similar success to their 4-0 win back in 2017 in their only other meeting against Wigan in this competition.

Manchester United have outscored Wigan 16-0 in their last five meetings, and our FA Cup soccer picks and predictions for Monday, January 8 explains why we’re likely to see more of the same.

Wigan vs Man United picks and predictions

It’s been a rough season for Wigan following their demotion from the Championship. They’re not far from the drop zone once again, although it’s important to note they’ve been hit with an eight-point deduction. That said, their last six matches in league play have seen them claim just five of a possible 18 points.

While they’ve enjoyed success at home, it’s not always been easy. They’ve taken victory in 10 of 15 matches across all competitions at DW Stadium, but they’ve hosted four sides from the Top 6 in the table and three have walked away with victories.

Manchester United have had an up-and-down season, but they’ve typically found a way to get results against lesser teams. That’s not to say it’s been either easy or pretty, but the team does have significant star power on display.

They’ll want to improve on their away form, however. The last five away fixtures have seen no victories versus three defeats, including losses at West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

But ten Hag is under pressure right now, and he doesn’t like to rotate much for Cup fixtures. As such, there’s expectation of a very strong Man United squad to take the pitch against Wigan.

Wigan have allowed the fifth-most shots on target of the 24 sides in League One, but the second-fewest goals per shot on target. Goalkeeper Sam Tickle has been a hero at times, albeit against much lesser quality than what he’ll face Monday.

On the flip side, no team has attempted fewer efforts on goal than Wigan, yet they lead the league in goals per shot on target. Man United can be had on the break, but Wigan may not be the team built to take advantage of that.

As such, the Red Devils should be able to throw a bit more forward in attack, meaning they’re likely to rack up some goals. I anticipate Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund will all see action, as ten Hag stressed in his press conference on Sunday that it’s “do or die”.

TonyBet is offering plus-odds on the Red Devils finding the back of the net three or more times, and that’s solid value. For all their struggles, Man United are built to punish a team like Wigan who concedes far too many scoring chances and relies on a keeper to bail them out against sub-par finishers in England’s third tier.

Back Manchester United to hit for three or more at +104 at TonyBet, taking advantage of a Wigan side that are dealing with some injuries and simply not playing well of late.

My best bet: Manchester United team total Over 2.5 (+104 at TonyBet)

Wigan vs Man United same-game parlay

Manchester United team total Over 2.5

Manchester United Over 5 corners

Manchester United Over 6 shots on goal

Not only are Wigan conceding a high number of shots on goal, they’ve conceded five or more corners in 75% of their home fixtures this season. Manchester United are averaging 6.3 corner kicks per match, and should get plenty of chances as they pepper away at the Wigan goal. I like the visitors to get at least six corners here.

To that point, we’re going to back the Red Devils to take seven or more shots that find the target. They’re averaging 4.25 shots on goal per 90 minutes in the Premier League, but they’re been firing at a higher rate over their past two matches with 12 efforts on goal from 23 shots.

We’ll combine these with our Over 2.5 goals for Man United for our same-game parlay. Bet365 offers the best price at +300 and is one of the few places that allows you to combine these plays.

Wigan vs Man United side and Over/Under analysis

Those wishing to back Manchester United to win will pay a large amount of juice. The Red Devils are priced -400 or more on the 3-way line. Wigan can be had at +1100 in multiple places, with the draw paying +550 at both DraftKings and FanDuel.

There’s always going to be some value in backing the home side in the FA Cup, especially when they’re such underdogs. At +330, the double chance isn’t a bad play to toss a few bucks on. That said, Man United should walk out with the win when the final whistle blows. Wigan are missing multiple key defenders, and the attacking quality will be too much.

The total of 2.5 is also quite juiced to the Over, with -172 the best price on offer. Those backing a low-scoring affair can get +140. The Over 3.5 will pay you as much as +155.

Wigan’s matches this season at home have evenly split between Over and Under, so I’d lean Over here. That said, our best bet takes away much of the juice, and I don’t see Wigan bagging multiple goals so it’s the better play.
