Fight analysis
This is going to be a major fight for Carlos Ulberg, who has the tools and style to make some serious noise in the light heavyweight division.
After losing his UFC debut to Kennedy Nzchukwu, he’s won his last five in a row, all by stoppage, and has looked like a bulldozer in each of those fights. Everything Ulberg throws looks like it has a lot of power behind it, and there's a skillful approach to his aggression, so he isn’t just relying on brute force.
Alonzo Menifield can be explosive, though he comes across as limited compared to Ulberg. He tends to rely on his toughness and has holes in his defense, but he hasn’t fought anyone powerful enough to put him in trouble aside from a stoppage loss to Ovince St. Preux in 2020. In his last fight against Dustin Jacoby, he won a decision despite getting outfought by a more technical kickboxer.
Ulberg is landing 7.29 significant strikes per minute at 59% accuracy and can go to the ground if he has to. As far as Menifield goes, he posts a 0.41 striking differential despite his heavy hands, so he’s going to get tagged by the capable Ulberg in any instance where he tries to generate offense.
Either way, Ulberg can’t sleep on Menifield’s power unless he wants to get put to sleep himself. In the past, Menifield’s conditioning and low output were sticking points that kept him from going beyond his current position in the division. He can rely on his big power and his conditioning has improved somewhat, but he’s overall out of his depth compared to Ulberg.
With Ulberg coming into his own as a well-rounded fighter with sound technique and notable striking power, he should formally announce his arrival to the top tier of the division with a win against Menifield.
Best best analysis
Though Menifield had a few good moments against Jacoby, it shouldn’t have been enough to warrant a win. I’d dare to venture that technically, Ulberg is just as skilled as Jacoby, but with better power and can wrestle Menifield if the situation calls for it.
Menifield swings wide hooks and props his chin straight up, leaving him open for counters or a counter hook to potentially crack him.
His low output will also allow Ulberg to busy strike his way to a lead, chipping away at him with jabs and body kicks, all before potentially stepping into his shots and making an effort to get him out.
We aren’t likely to see Menifield resort to grappling or shooting for takedowns, either, so that will give Ulberg a simple game plan to poke at Menifield before dropping bombs on him.
I fully expect Ulberg to outclass Menifield in the striking department, and his work rate along with his considerable power will get the job done. My best bet for this match is Ulberg winning by knockout.
