UFC 255: Moreno vs Royval Picks and Predictions

Brandon Royval is the +160 underdog against Brandon Moreno for their prelim fight at UFC 255, but this should be a much closer fight than the odds would suggest.

Moreno vs Royval Betting Preview

You've got to feel for "The Assassin Baby" Brandon Moreno, who is the No. 1 contender in the flyweight division but was overlooked – not once, but twice – for the title fight this weekend. Moreno is fresh off a unanimous decision win over Jussie Formiga in March and is now 3-0-1 over his last four fights.

Despite being just 26 years old, Moreno has 23 MMA fights under his belt and three of his five career defeats came when he was a teenager. He's a well-rounded fighter that combines high-level grappling with crisp boxing.

Brandon "Raw Dog" Royval enters at No. 6 in the UFC flyweight rankings and is coming off a submission win over Kai Kara-France. Royval has won four fights in a row – including two in a row at the UFC level – and each of those victories has been by submission.

With eight submission wins in his career, the 28-year-old Royval is a very dangerous grappler. However, he also displayed impressive striking in his win over Kara-France with a 39-22 edge in significant strikes.

Moreno vs Royval UFC Prediction and Betting Pick

PREDICTION: Royval to win +160 - As much as I like Moreno and think he deserved a title shot, this isn't the greatest matchup for him. Royval has a very well-rounded skillset and is one of the bigger guys in the 125-pound weight class, so Moreno won't enjoy his usual size advantage.

While Royval's strike defense is a bit suspect, he has the edge in power and looked terrific in both of his UFC fights, submitting a veteran in Tim Elliot and outstriking a Muay Thai specialist in Kara-France.

This should be a terrific tilt and both fighters are closer than the odds suggest, which has me leaning towards the underdog at +160.
