Makhachev vs Hooker betting preview
Islam Makhachev is the No. 5-ranked lightweight contender and is on an eight-fight winning streak, most recently a submission victory over Thiago Moises in July. Makhachev made his UFC debut in 2015 and is 9-1 in the octagon but has never really gotten a signature fight against a highly-ranked contender.
Hailing from Dagestan, Makhachev trained for years with his close friend — and former UFC lightweight champ — Khabib Nurmagomedov. The 30-year-old is a terrific wrestler with ferocious ground-and-pound and strong submission skills.
Makhachev was originally supposed to face Rafael dos Anjos at this event but after RDA pulled out due to injury, Dan "The Hangman" Hooker stepped in to replace him. The New Zealand native is fresh off a unanimous decision victory over Nasrat Haqparast in September, which allowed him to rebound from back-to-back losses against Michael Chandler and Dustin Poirier.
Hooker is 8-3 in his last 11 trips to the octagon, a span which includes victories against Top-10 ranked lightweights Paul Felder and Al Iaquinta, as well as a stoppage win over welterweight contender Gilbert Burns. The 31-year-old has some of the best technical kickboxing in the division and does a great job of setting up his combinations with calf kicks and feints.

Makhachev vs Hooker UFC prediction and betting pick
Fight to go the distance - Yes (-120)
Makhachev has gotten tons of hype as the heir apparent to Khabib but Hooker is the best fighter he has ever faced which, makes this lopsided line pretty disrespectful to The Hangman. That said, Makhachev is a stylistic nightmare for Hooker and his ability to control his opponents with his wrestling, both offensively and defensively, is extremely impressive.
However, Hooker has a five-inch reach advantage and possesses excellent distance management, as well as strong takedown defense. He has faced plenty of killers in the octagon and he will make Makhachev work for this. Expect Hooker to drag this fight the distance and with his superior striking ability (and his last three victories coming by decision) he's also worth a sprinkle at +1,200 to win by points.
