Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia betting preview
Christmas comes early for fight fans as Davis and Garcia finally come to blows. These two are knockout artists who have had enough of each other to the point where they insisted boxing politics step out of the way for their grudge match. It may not be the most impactful fight as far as pound-for-pound rankings or title implications are concerned, but make no mistake, this is a major fight.
Davis has emerged as one of the premier stars of the sport. The Baltimore blaster’s punching power remains his calling card, his underrated boxing skills might be his best asset. We’ve seen Davis run through opponents as he came up, but recently, he’s displayed excellent counter-punching like we saw in his KO wins over Rolando Romero and Hector Luis Garcia.
"Tank" holds several key advantages in what is considered a 50/50 fight. With knockout power in each hand, great hand speed, and experience fighting on the big stage, this could just be another night in the office for him. A key factor is the catchweight being closer to his natural weight than Garcia's.
Garcia has been given the star treatment for some time, but now he is in position to actually earn it. Davis represents a significant upgrade in competition for the 23-year-old, though he’s up to the task. While Davis possesses the better power, Garcia has the real eraser in this fight with a left hook akin to a cruise missile launched from a B-52 bomber.
“King Ry” has been fighting at junior welterweight for his last two bouts. He’ll have natural advantages in size, height, and reach, and the speed difference between the two is negligible. Garcia has shown shades of potential greatness, but he has also displayed reckless defensive qualities that can doom him against a big puncher like Davis.
This won’t be Davis’ first rodeo in a high-profile rivalry fight. Garcia is coming into the biggest fight of his career not having been in the ring in 10 months and at his lightest weight in two years. Right off the bat, we’ll see if the catchweight has done anything to slow Garcia down, and what kind of pace Davis hopes to set for this huge fight.
Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia boxing prediction and best bet
Prediction: Davis ML
When Garcia last fought at lightweight, he was buzzed and dropped by the meandering Luke Campbell. That was two years ago, and Garcia’s recent showings at junior welterweight made me feel he would soon outgrow that division as well. With the fight happening at 136 pounds, there’s no way Garcia is going to be 100%. It‘s questionable if his conditioning allows him to keep Davis at the end of his long jab for 12 rounds.
Davis fought last January and looked sharper than ever. His fights are lasting longer because he’s taking a more cerebral approach to his offense, now setting traps and exhibiting great timing. Outside of Garcia’s left hook, Davis is going to be the fresher fighter, and without a handicap that will allow him to operate at his best.
We’re picking Davis to win.
Prediction: Davis moneyline (-245 at DraftKings)
Best bet: Davis by decision
When two punchers who acknowledge their opponent’s power face off, it usually becomes a tentative affair. Davis’ fights are lasting longer and he’s starting slower to gauge his opponent’s resolve. If there is a stoppage, it may happen later, but these two might leave something to be desired in the first half of the fight.
Unless Garcia is dead on arrival from cutting weight, he should be able to keep Davis honest and make it to the final bell. Puncher vs. puncher fights usually go the distance, and our best bet is that Davis wins on the cards for a +500 score.
Prediction: Davis to win by decision (+500 at DraftKings)
