Idaho Potato Bowl
Eastern Michigan Eagles +3.5 ($1100 to win $1000)
This is a really interesting matchup of two programs who had a ton of ups and downs this season. San Jose State played the early part of the season like a team that could make some real noise in the Bowl Season by earning a spot in a New Year's Six Bowl Game but that didn't happen as they had some serious consistency issues along the way. Eastern Michigan finished the Regular Season on a 4-1 straight up run and I've had some success going with the teams who have the hot hand this Bowl Season. The Eagles are 0-4 now in Bowl Games under head coach Chris Creighton so you better believe it means something to this team to get off the snide and win only their second Bowl Game and their first since 1987 (ironically also against San Jose State). The stage is set and you better believe you're getting everything out of Eastern Michigan in this one.
What makes this even more interesting is the fact that the two defenses match the two offenses in terms of strengths. San Jose State loves to throw the ball with their stud QB Chevan Cordeiro but Eastern Michigan has the #37 ranked passing defense in the Country allowing only 208.8 passing yards per game. EMU went 6-1 SU this season when allowing less than 240 passing yards in a game. SJSU average 209.8 passing yards per game. The real key here will likely be third down conversion because San Jose State have made a living holding opponents to field goals this season but Eastern Michigan had the best third down offense in the MAC Conference and should be able to make some key conversions in this one. Again you have to think about motivation. Eagles come in hot, they want that first Bowl win for Creighton while San Jose State expected to play a week later than this when the season first started.
Eastern Michigan is 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games coming into the Bowl Season and are 5-1 ATS in their last six games played in December. San Jose State are on a horrendous 0-6 ATS run heading into the Bowl Season, they have failed to cover the spread in their last six games played on Field Turf (this is being played on Boise State's blue field) and they are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 non-conference games. The Potato Bowl is not usually a close game but this one could come right down to the wire and I think the Eagles get it done.

Boca Raton Bowl
Toledo Rockets -3.5 ($1100 to win $1000)
The unthinkable is happening right now. I am betting on two MAC teams in two Bowl Games on this fine Tuesday. Crazy? Maybe but so far this Bowl Season the MAC is 1-0 ATS with Miami-Ohio kicking things off with a spread cover against UAB and I think the Conference is actually going to have a pretty good Bowl Season overall. Don't get me wrong here. Liberty is a pretty damn good team but we have to read the room. They come into the Bowl Season on a three game losing streak and their Head Coach is now gone for Auburn leaving an interim to take over the Bowl Game duties. The Boca Raton Bowl is where it all started for Toledo Head Coach Jason Candle as he was the interim in 2015 and the Rockets beat Temple. Seven years and two MAC Conference Championships later (including a 17-7 win over Ohio this season) and Candle remains without a Bowl win since that debut as the interim going 0-4 in his last four. Hugh Freeze was a perfect 3-0 in Bowl Games as Head Coach of Liberty but he is long gone now.
Most of the success Liberty had this season was with their pass rush and their ability to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Toledo has a tremendous offensive line however and when they run the ball a lot they win games going 5-0 when rushing for 225+ yards in a game this season. Liberty ranks #56 in the Country against the run allowing only 144 rushing yards per game but in their last three games of the Regular Season they allowed 600 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. The Flames also have big time turnover problems as they have turned the ball over 2+ times in a game NINE times this season. You have to imagine there were two types of preparations for this Bowl Game. Toledo is desperate to follow up their MAC Championship win with a Bowl Game win for Coach Candle (would be his first as official Head Coach of the program) while Liberty are reeling after the departure of their Head Coach who had previously led them to three Bowl Game wins.
Liberty comes in a pretty hot mess and despite all sorts of success against the MAC and in games played in December, they are only 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall coming in and only 1-6 ATS in their last seven games coming off a straight up loss. Toledo have been knocked all week for only beating up on bad teams who didn't make Bowl Games but they are 5-0 ATS in their last five games versus INDEPENDENT schools and they have all the motivation in the world to take advantage of the Hugh Freeze departure and cap off what has been a really decent season for the Rockets. This would be the full circle moment Jason Candle has been looking for since it all started back in 2015 and I think this group gets it done for him.

"The Eagles are 0-4 now in Bowl Games under head coach Chris Creighton", but 3 of those losses were by a combined 10 points
So, Creighton has gone 3-1 ATS in postseason games then. Both EM and SJ were outrushed by their opponent on all of their losses, so I teased them up with Toledo. These MAC games can get crazy for sure. I was surprised you didn't talk about DQ (Dequan Finn) in your writeup for Toledo
2-0 Tuesday sounds about right

Love the pick. Great run so far this bowl season let’s keep it up!! I’m a new member so it won’t let me start a thread. You pretty much covered all the info. Good analysis Phil, I appreciate the effort you’ve put into each of these posts.
HarryJohnson’s Posted Bowl Record - 0-0
San Jose St is 0-5 ATS in their last five games.
San Jose’s last 5 games are a little deceiving because those three wins are against three of the worst teams in D1 football. Those 3 teams (Hawaii, Nevada, and Colorado St) have a combined 7 wins. San Jose St beat 1 bowl eligible team this year - Wyoming.
EMU is 4-1 ATS in their last 5.
Weather looks a little iffy - below freezing and a good chance of snow. Hoping this is the case because EMU is the better rushing team.
Picks:
3 units on under 53
3 units on EMU +3.5
1 unit on EMU ML +145
