QB  Jerermiah Masoli should be a Superstar this year .. Started 2008 as a possible RS , became 5th qb on depth chart and eneded up starting 10 Games ... Holds the Oregon QB rushing record(718) including 106 in the Bowl win over Oklahoma St...
Masoli will need to stay focused with former starter Justun Roper waiting in the wings... Roper was the Spring game MVP throwing for 3 scores and 22-34 Passing 301 Yards and 47 Rushing yards
 
 
 
RB  Legarrette Blount is a beast at 6-2 240+...7.3 YPC and 1,002 rushing yards last year teaming with the now Gon Johnson to form the shcools first 1000 Yard duo....

Aaron Plufgard 5-10 175 looked like Masoli's favorite target this spring grabbing 6-107...
Former top recruit at USC  Jamere Holland is the Fastest player on the team ...
Jeff Maehl returns after catching 39 balls and 5 TD's
Lavasier Tuinei is a Transfer that shoudl step right in and make plays as he did in the Spring
Ed Dickson is a Fantastic option at TE 35-508  3 TD and should catch 50+ this year and should end up being an early pick in next years NFL draft
 
 
O-Line   here is where the Problems start
The First team O-Line got beat bad at times in the Spring game and Kelly and his staff need to find the Right Combination fast with a Trip coming to Boise in week 1

While the Ducks lose alot of talent to the NFL .. it's not like the D was shutting teams down .. Some fresh faces could mean better things in 2009
 
 
 
D-Line    Will Tukuafu is the Only returning starter on the Line ...
 DT Blake Ferras is fighting off some stiff competition from 320 LB+ Simi Toeaina and Terrane Montgomery... DE turned DT Brandon Bair seems to have locked down the other spot ...
Kenny Rowe might be in a rotation with several others at DE...
 
 
LB  Lost only 1 starter
Casey Matthews returns to start at MLB
WLB Spencer Paysinger should be a playmaker this year 
Eddie Pleasent is super speedy ..
JC Tranfer Bryson Littlejohn has looked fantastic in the Spring and is the  Hard Hitter the Ducks need 
The rest of the depth is all So. and FR...
 
 
 
Secondary  ... Losing Chung and Byrd hurts
Walter Thurmond III is on Fire this spring and should be ALL PAC 10 in 2009..
S TJ Ward should be everywhere
 
 
The Ducks should be able to score with anyone
in the country ... the Defense will be the Key to the 2009 Season ... We shoudl find out startign as early as week 1

Teams just outside of the TOP 30
 
in no Order
 
Texas Tech   should make the Top 30 in the next go around
 
Iowa     Solid team..Losing Both DT's could be the Hawkeyes downfall
 
Cincinnati   Offense should be amazing... Defense almost loses everyone
 
BYU       Max Hall should put up monster Numbers
 
Arkansas    should be a Major Jump in 2009
 
Miami      still Young and getting better but so is the rest of the ACC..still one of my favorite teams to fade
 
West Virginia     Jarrett Brown gets his chance ...
 
Minnesota      might be a ML DOG bread winner in 2009
 
Stanford     Suprise ... the Cardinal will pull 3 or 4 upsets this year
 
Illinois      can't wait to jump on the bandwagon and then jump off just as fast

I don't see Oregon beating Boise State.  Then, it will be a question of just how far does the balloon deflate.  I also do not like teams that have difficulties hiring assistant coaches.  With a new HC, and a terrible defense, it is hard to see Oregon as a Top 10 team this year.  Then again, it is hard to see any Pac 10 team as a Top 10 team this year.

Except for USC.  It will be tough to win in Boise, but Oregon might have the firepower to pull it off.  I have Oregon as my 4th team in the Pac 10 right now, so that would put them 25-30 nationally.

Yeah Boise St. might beat the Ducks right now with Home Field added to the Broncos i would Make Boise ST -5...That being said if I could get the Ducks + anything more than 4 I would jump on ....

The Pac 10 always gets pooped on by people for being soft or weak even though their schedules always rank in the Top 25 hardest in the Country  .... They usually show up in the Bowls and Take care of their Biz.. ONLY USC will stay in my top 10 Forsure

QB  Daryll Clark 59.8%  19-6   2592 and 282 Rushing Yards and 10 TD's is back and should be even better this year and he will have to be with the departure of so many on both sides of the ball...former high recruit PS#5 Pat Devlin has left the team and transfered to Delaware...
Kevin Newsome 6-3 true Fr. is the future of the Program at QB, a  great dual threat ...He should get plenty of playing time with the soft schedule ....
 
 
 
 
RB  Evan Royster might be in the running for the Heisman after 1236 (6.5) and 12 TD's with 17 catches last year ...
 Stephen Green had 578 Yards last year and also returns with his blazing speed (4.29 if you believe it ?) ...Brandon Beachum was a PS#14 ly getting some carries 28-114... The Nittany Lions have a Top 10 Backfield in the country(if not Top 5) ...

Brandon Brackett is 6-6 235+ in limited playing time he caught 13 Balls in 2008
Brandon Moye 6-5 but a slinky 195. should be ready for a breakout year
Graham Zug caught 11 balls for 19.3 Avg last year
Justin Brown might pplay as a true Fr. at 6-3 210+ he can also stretch the field
TE Andrew Quarless should be more of an option this year although he is more of a blocking TE

If Penn State is your highest ranked Big 10 team, I agree with you totally.  They get their backfield returning, as you pointed out.  They get an unbelieveably soft schedule that includes 8 home games, Iowa and Ohio State being two of them.  I can't see this team losing more than one game, if that, unless they totally unravel.  They should be the class of a rather weak Big 10 this year.

Some very good Pieces are in place and with the Soft schedule this unit will have time to gel....
Steve Wisniewski is Moving from G to C and should be all Big 10
at G Lou Eliades, Johnnie Troutman  
Dennis Landholt Moves from RT to LT
Ako Poti is slated to start at RT
Eric Shrive is a Monster at 6-7 and was a Prized recruit this year and should see some time as a True Fr..
 
 
 
D-Line  
Although ends Maybin,Gaines and Evans are Gone , The D-Line should be Top 10 in the Country ...This Unit should be able to Rotate Quality players 2 or 3 deep
 DT Jared Odrick 6-5 310+ is back after being a First Team All BIG 10 ly
Ollie Ogbu should have a breakout year at the other DT Spot
Abe Koroma and Devon Still should also get some Burn at DT
DE Jerome Hayes (Tweener) 5th yr SR should have a breakout year although his is missing time in the spring due to injury...
DE Jack Crawford was a PS#14 ly
DE Eric Lattimore is a Beast at 6-6  260+
DE Kevion Latham is a speed rusher  
 
 
 
LB   Lock and Loaded
Novarro Bowman so PS#16 was a super recruit of Johnson's in 2006 and has lived upto his Billing leading PSU in Tackles Ly with 106 and an awesome 16.5 TKFL ...amazing considering Novarro didnt start until the 4th game
Micheal Mauti PS#21 ly should win the other Starting spot at OLB after playing great in reserve action in 2008...
Bani Gbadyu Started 3 games last year and he and 2008 recruit PS#19 Mike Yancich provide excellent depth at OLB
MLB is deep as well with Sean Lee who should be Fired up to play after missing 2008
Josh Hull  will not give up his starting spot without a Fight ....
 
 
Secondary  all 4 starters are gone (200 Tackles )
alot will depend on the Front 7 getting Pressure on the QB
Drew Aastorino and AJ Wallace have some experience and will need to step up
The other spots appear to be wide open
 
 
Overall Penn St. will just reload and catching Ohio St. at Home should be Huge ... anything less than another trip to the Rose Bowl will Make the Happey Vallley Fans Angry...
Losing the Last game of the season on the road might happen again this year

yeah PSU is my highest ranked BIG10 team forsure...I am not a Huge fan of the BIG10 ,but this year the Conference should be better than last year ... Michigan,+Illinois can only get better.../

only 3 BIG 10 teams made my Top 30 but Iowa is looming just right outside

Penn St. {always overrated PSU} call them what you like.
 
All the receivers are gone but doesn't really matter because their qb actually stinks when he plays a real defense.
They will run the ball in that weak conf. and with their weak non-conf. schedule they might even go undefeated. So just think, Joe Pa will get his team in another BCS game and they will get hammered again.
Maybe they will luck out and catch the Big East team or an undefeated non-bcs team {maybe a Boise} and get to play one of them. That's more their speed and they would have a 50/50 shot to win. Then some will actually think they are good when they truly suck and are overrated. Then we can finally send "Joe Pa" on his way and bring 21st century football to Happy Valley. While I'm at it, "Happy Valley" is freaking gay.
Ending, lets all hope this team slips up somewhere, this years Iowa where are you ? I think we all want to see the two best teams in the championship game. Then again think of the money making opportunities if PSU gets USC again, Oklahoma, or God forbid a SEC team. Of course we will have to lay some double digit chalk but that shouldn't be a problem as it will probably be covered by halftime.
That's my take on overrated "U".

The QB stinks?

They did get hammered last year in the BCS game, but Paterno may be the best bowl game coach.....ever.

They truly suck?  Truly?

Last 10 years, six bowl games. 4-2, not bad until you realize four of them were the alamo and outback bowls. Did beat FSU in Orange in '06. Missed a couple of bowl years in there. Time for Joe Pa to move on, the 1980's are over.
 
Qb's always stink, more of the system played though and the lack of recruiting a big time qb. What good defense did Clark excel against last year ?

The fact is that they have the BEST shot at going undefeated of any the the BCS Conference teams.  Who do they play?  Like it or not, the BCS is a popularity contest with rules.  Rule #1.  Any BCS team that goes undefeated is automatically ranked ahead of any other BCS team that has a defeat.  Odd, because Penn State can be ranked #1 in the polls, lose to Michigan State, and fall to 8 or 9 or worse, depending on who is undefeated or only has 1 loss.  If you need proof of that, just look at Ohio State in 2006.  Undefeated because they played nobody, and they could not have beaten most of the teams that played in a BCS game including the other undefeated team, Boise State.

Worst stretch in PSU history, true, and only 4-2 in bowls.

 Paterno will leave soon enough, and the CFB will miss him.  Had another undefeated team in the 90's. and has won 2 of last 4 big ten title, in the aughts.

Clark had 280 yards and 2 td's against the greatest defense in all of recorded history, rushing for a third TD.  Overall had a fine season, all big ten QB.  He is a good college QB, period.

And yes, I would.  I still say that paterno is a great bowl coach, and I would take my chances.

I was just responding to the ridiculous hyperbole of your first post.  PSU will be very good this year, they have a ridiculously easy schedule.  Top ten is certainly within reach.

QB TJ Yates is back after starting 6 Games and Playing in 7 last year ... Injured his Ankle vs VA Tech and missed the next 5 before returning vs NC ST, Duke and the Bowl Game ... TJ Completed 60% of his passes for 1,168  11 TD's and 4 INTS ...Even with the WR's gone from LY I think Yates will have a breakout year in 2009...
Mike Paulus 6-5 215 So. saw limited action in 2008 and was higg recruit in 2007 PS#8...
Branden Hanson 6-6 195  was one of Butch Davis's top recruits last year PS#11....
Plenty of depth at QB
 
 
RB    Shaun Draughn ran for 866 Yards (4.4) ...playing in all 13 games Shaun was named the starter at TB for the Final 6...
Ryan Houston is a 6-2 245+LB monster avg 3.9 YPC on 77 carries and scored 8 TD's in 2008
needless to say Houston is a very good short yardage back...
FB Bobby Rome is a brusing FB at 5-11 250+
Anthony Elsy is nice pass catcher out of the backfield at either FB or HB...
Jamal Womble should see the field as a Red-shirt FR...

Rashad Mason is a 6-5 SO. who should have plenty of chances to make plays in 2009
Dwight Jones 6-4 220+ So has great hands catching almost everything thrown his way in Fall Practice
Todd Harrleson RD-FR has a nice combo of Speed and Hands
Joshua Adams FR 6-4... is a top recruit this year and could see the field as a TRue FR.
TE Zack Pianalto suffered some injuries last year but is helthy for the Spring and might have a breakout year in 2009...

Losing OT Garrett Reynolds+RG Darity 
Kyle Jolly has started 26 straight at LT and should be all ACC in 2009
Lowell Dyer returns at C after starting 9 ly..
Alan Pelc started 10 games in a row starting in week 4 ly...
Aaron Stahl missed some time this spring but should be ready for the season opener....

The point is this team is overrated but very well could go undefeated with that ridiculous schedule and be playing in the NC game. And they won't deserve it.

Also I would take a Fla./Okl. rematch or a USC/Fla. Texas/ Fla. over a Penn St./ Fla anyday.
