I get the whole complacency leads to disaster.

I understand the risk of law enforcement officer and going into a unknown hostile potentially deadly situation but it seems the article you furnished sheds a bit of the reality.

They are training these humans to be in fear of the population they supposedly are supposed to protect.

Let's be clear about this.  We are not training military personal to invade a terror cell in Mosul or Kabul,  we are training us civilians to deal with safety and protection to a general population of what could be referred to campers who had too much.

It seems that the mantra is training a self defense class as if it was a nin jujitsu studio to the 10th degree black where reality what they need is a judo and maybe a few good twakwon do strikes.

Your article essentially makes my point, raider. This guy talks about being trained to be fearful. He says, among other things, that every year when he would go for firearm certification, they would start by watching 30 minutes of police shootings. He likened it to the Red Asphalt style scare tactic flicks they show in Drivers Ed. That's insanity. They should be telling them that there higher odds of them being struck by lightning than being shot during a traffic stop. The numbers show that the job in not increasingly dangerous. The odds of being killed in the line of duty by gun fire has actually decreased from the pre-1980s era but cops are being taught to be afraid and officer involved shootings have increased. Cops are being taught that the shoplifter isn't simply a petty criminal but a deranged psychopath who will take your gun and shoot you with it. Are we training our firemen this way? Showing them videos of firemen burning to death? I'm a climber. I don't keep myself alert by watching climbing accidents. I know you made a point that the danger in policing involves people actively trying to do you harm but this goes to my original point: People aren't out here just mowing down cops. Even amongst hardened criminals, real killers, there aren't a ton of cop killers. They're creating the fear in their own heads. About 50 killed a year by gunfire. About 5 of those during traffic stops. Tens of millions of traffic stops a year. Maybe five end in a cop being shot. I get that nobody wants to be one of the five but there has to be a better way to prepare these guys without making them powder kegs.

Correct.  But not fear as in too afraid to even do their job fear but a respectful fear of the inherent danger.  Be alert.  This has to be trained until it is muscle memory. It had to be.

Yes.  That is my point. The trends were getting better — but now they are getting worse.

Absolutely firemen are shown these things.  Every year at one job I had early on during college we would be shown a video of the dangers of industrial environments.  One of them always stuck with me about a guy giving a great speech when a gas line ignited because he had by-passed safety protocols, etc.

For sure this is a training technique that is used.

You HAVE to be aware of the inherent dangers of the job!

Perhaps, with all due respect, the places I grew up were slightly more dangerous than the Maine area.  I have been all over the world — even in war zones — and I still would be leery of some of the places I grew up, whether I was a cop or not.

It is not like the old days where the beat cop only needed his baton, and rarely needed that.  There are even kids nowadays without a conscious that have guns.  That is totally different.  So, yes, in a sense you do need to train the cops differently.

Pure conjecture with no concrete numbers to support it. It's a narrative. A narrative I, myself, have even bought into. A narrative that is being drilled into our officers but the numbers don't support it. Crime rates are dowm compared to the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. Homicides are down across the board. Police killed in the line of duty are down. Use of deadly force, often against unarmed suspects is up. Cops are fearful like they are in warzones. It's a bullshit narrative.

I understand maine is unlike alot of major cities, and the idea of up home is much more tranquil however , we get back to a previous point how evil and ugly is your prison system.

We had a man a few years back shoot and kill a police officer in norridgewock.  Deputy Cole,  chased this yo the torture being performed to a then cop now correctional officer who pushed the middle of the back broke the tendendent and stated remember me when you play with your self masturbation caused tears in shoulder and a kick to the back of leg.

Because inmates being processed were deemed a threat,  simply stated over and over is I am fear of my life and the life of my can't and Chabot a Haitian national would perform the advanced interrogation technique.

Cole was shot dead the suspect stripped and sodomized was brought into custody.

This is what they brought on themselves, so the retaliation,  they purposely designed ways to fuck skowhegan town alot of town trucks caught fire, the place just went south fast.

Now what was a maine city of about 12000 has about 1200 year round residents. Their is no accountability but again up here is different because no one will help any of them . No neibor will cross the line if they heard their family screaming in a burning house the locals simply ignore what ever bull shit the cops are going through.  They take care of theirs is now the common thought.

At one time the police and their families were apart of the community now they are shunned. Some where a police asks for the public's help there is very little response.

Even within the department's office,  for example a priest went missing in northern Maine.  His remains were found 9 months later. No one knows.

A police officer shot at a lift driver and her passengers   then a shots were fired at police cruisers.

This entire racket set up by gross prison procedures have led us down a path that 20 year kid would face death then arrest .

But your right that this happens up home it must be much much worse around the country,  as far as growing up I am grown and have traveled to areas all over the country.

I lived in the streets, rooming houses trap dens, trailer parks and neiborhoods that are poor because rent is affordable. And in my many encounters with people from all over America.

Same theme I rather deal with the gangs mind and lawless society then to ever have any interaction with a prick with a badge and gun.

As far as personally fear does not exist .

I am what you may describe as fool hardy.

I simply become curious. Because I don't believe anyone on face value

and I really do not have a problem with fear maybe a bit reckless then most and simply place my lot with God and drive forward.

I met some incredible people and the dregs of soicity but the systematic problems with police is in the training within the department of corrections the DA office the entire structure needs a co.plete nation wide over haul because the penal system the public safety system and the kangaroo courts in America are destroying this once free soicity.

In 2017, 3,410 children and teens were killed with guns in America—the greatest number since 1998 (see Table 36)

2014 reversed a seven-year trend of declining child and teen gun deaths. 2015, 2016 and 2017 continued that disturbing upward trend

Gun violence was the second leading cause of death for children and teens ages 1-19 and the leading cause for Black children and teens, claiming more child lives than cancer, pneumonia, influenza, asthma, HIV/AIDS and opioids combined.

Since 1963, 186,239 children and teens have been killed with guns on American soil—four times the number of U.S. soldiers killed in action in the Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq wars combined.

Children and teens in the U.S. are 15 times more likely to die from gunfire than their peers in 31 other high-income countries combined.

American children and teens accounted for a third (34 percent) of all children and teens in these countries but 88 percent of child and teen gun deaths.

For every child or teen fatally shot in 2017, another five suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds.

An estimated 18,227 children and teens were injured with guns in 2017—a six percent increase from 2016

Children of color, boys and older teens are most likely to be killed or injured with guns.

Black children and teens had the highest gun death rate in 2017 (11.2 per 100,000

Black children and teens were four times more likely to be killed or injured with a gun than their white peers

Although Black children and teens made up only 14 percent of all American children and teens, they accounted for 41 percent of child and teen gun deaths.

84 percent of gun deaths and 91 percent of gun injuries among children and teens occurred among 15- to 19-year-olds.

The rate at which Americans died from firearm injuries increased sharply starting in 2015, a new study shows.

As cities battled the deadly pandemic in 2020, a survey of over 125 diverse police agenciesfound that 57% of them saw upticks in firearm homicides and nearly 70% saw upticks in nonfatal shootings. Available data also suggeststhat violence increased in large cities in 2020, regardless of local politics or governing political parties.

    Gun deaths 2014-12,418   2015-13,537  2016-15,112  2017-15,679  2018-14,789  2019-15,208

Since 2013, fatal firearm injuries for children and teenshave risen unabated.

Firearms are the second leading cause of death among American children and adolescents, after car crashes.

Firearms have been the leading cause of death for African-American youth for well over a decade.

The youth violence epidemic peaked in 1993 and was followed by a rapid, sustained drop over the rest of the 1990s.4However, in 2000, more than 10,000 Americans were killed with guns, and guns are much more likely to be used in homicides of teens and young adults than in homicides of people of other ages.

Juvenile offenders appear to be more likely to possess guns than adults. page 5

Department of Criminal Justice Services found that juvenile of- fenders were more likely than adults to have carried a semiautomatic pistol at the crime scene (18% versus 7%).

They were also more likely to have carried a revolver (10% versus 7%).

So, all of my points are very easily verified.

Just because I have studied this stuff, I have to remember others have not.

Guns and gun crime Amon youths are up since they started trending down years ago.

Guns affect our races more than whites among youths.

Youths are more apt to carry a gun to commit a crime than years ago.

These are things that cannot be denied with facts.  Facts simply do not care about a ‘narrative’ — they are what they are.

Since it affects our kids more than whites, we should be doing something about it — instead of simply saying it is a narrative.

Children of color and children in poverty need more than denial; these children need society to stop denying facts and work to fix the underlying issues.

Yes. This sort of thing was on the down trend since the 70s until the 90s and later but NOT recently — they are UP!

What part of this trend is confusing?

Cops injured and/or injured or killed incidents by year:

    2014 - 222

    2015 - 278

    2016 - 304

    2017 - 304

    2018 - 280

    2019 - 370

    2020 - 407

Yes. This sort of thing was on the down trend since the 70s until the 90s and later but NOT recently — they are UP!

What part of this trend is confusing?

Cops injured and/or injured or killed incidents by year:

    2014 - 222

    2015 - 278

    2016 - 304

    2017 - 304

    2018 - 280

    2019 - 370

    2020 - 407

I think I get your point.  There are bad folks.  At least with them you know where you stand.

There are bad cops — we have all had dealing with one.  This is bad because they are supposed to be a trusted person you can respect.  But when they do a disservice to the badge it is harder to comprehend.

At least with the ‘bad guy on the street’ — you expect it.

    @Raiders22

Incidents. Not guns. I've been talking about police killed by firearms specifically but even include police stabbed, ect. Are you really gonna try to pull a fast one? Incidents? Traffic accidents and such?  Friendly fire? What part of this is confusing, Raiders? You know you are wrong and it's killing you. You have nothing to back yourself up so you're twsting words and hiding behind condescending tone. The best part is I bet they count Covid in that 407 in 2020, which is icing on the cake. Mull that one over.

    Yes. Gun incidents.

Please try to stay caught up:  we are talking about gun violence against police not Wuhan Flu.

So, again nothing but facts that anyone can look up.  So, not anything for me to be wrong about — I was just speaking to the facts.

Sorry if you took it as condescending.  In a text it may seem that way; I’m not.

    @Raiders22

Where are your numbers coming from and what are the parameters for incident? Being shot? Being shot at? A suspect brandishing a weapon? My numbers are concrete and definitive. 47 officers killed by guns in 2020. That even after the fallout of George Floyd led to officers being targeted. 47. Down from 51 in 2019. Cops aren't being mowed down at alarming rates. Not to mention the fact that even your own numbers coincide with the a dramatic uptick in the use of deadly force. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Back to carnage troop levels in Minneapolis has risen to record levels.

The unprecedented level of security includes more than 3,000 National Guard troops and at least 1,100 officers from public safety agencies across the state as part of a joint effort known as Operation Safety Net. The massive show of force, officials say, is aimed at preventing a repeat of the violence that erupted across the city last summer, including the burning of a police station and an estimated $350 million in damage to buildings and businesses.

But the wartime posture has alarmed some residents and elected officials who have repeatedly complained in recent weeks that the heavily militarized approach ignores the community’s trauma over the events of last summer, when mostly peaceful protesters were tear-gassed and injured by police action. Many elected officials think that aggressive response resulted in the subsequent violence and destruction, lessons that some believe were ignored in Brooklyn Center.
