Where your post begins to err rhetorically, is the second premise:
    • Christians are brainwashed from birth
Not only is this is logically invalid (as it is logically false to state that ?x((C(x)?B(x)), where x=a person, C(x)=x is a Christian, and B(x)=x was brainwashed from birth into Christianity), but it is also very misleading.

Are you meaning to say that teaching children things from when they are very young is brainwashing, and therefore wrong? Is teaching our children mathematics from birth, brainwashing? Again, this seems to be another example of intellectual dishonesty -- you would reject one instance of a certain procedure, but you would accept another instance of the same procedure. I would argue it to be quite hypocritical.

Fair enough, I get that a lot. I stand by what I said, you make very valid points and are obviously much more educated to state fact than I. For the record though, you like I will be dead within 100 years and your taking me serious is irrelevant to the facts. Carry on, you are doing a great job with your work, frankly I am enjoying it although I will admit you are just a man as I and your opinion eloquently and thought out as only someone who has wasted the same countless years in study on something so meaningless in the long run,to make sure every thought is not out of context is really no different then those who are brainwashed at birth as so many are, I see it first hand to a fault in the deep South.

You can define cults (and all your other fancy gibberish) and whatever you think you have learned (wasted) in your several decades of your life to fight the good fight when all one needs is common sense. I do not need to quote anything or prove anything to anyone to be just as correct, or more so in some area's (although I realize that is unfathomable to you) because it really all boils down to one thing...If you told someone that a virgin would have a baby that would rise from the dead without religious overtones they would put you away.

Common sense, not wasting one's life as a college professor is what matters, It Free's people up to live life, not waste it arguing such mute points (at least for days if not lifetimes with those you cannot sway. Those that can do, those that can't teach. As interesting as you portray yourself, you are basically in the same place those you argue with are, wasting life on a meaningless subject because it is a waste of time if too much time is put into it when one can be doing so much more from either point of view.

Your points are dead on for the most part (at least the few I wasted time deciphering), but you are the same as the cult (you define it your way, i'll mine), wasting your life with an agenda that is self serving. I do it because I am right, it's common sense where as you spend countless days, weeks, months, years and decades thinking about this, trying to prove a point to those who will never listen and igf they did, so what. It is fun trying, but a watre of time, Truly a wasted life.

Finally, If I do contradict myself or misspell words or use them out of context, so what. It does not make my house less cold, my steak taste any different or affect me in any way and frankly your opinion is yours, not mine. Carry on with your elegant banter, you are obviously the man and seriously probably quite interesting if I took the time to read most of your facts instead of capping games or doing something actually productive or fun...Knock your self out, we know the same thing, it is a fallacy, that I agree with you on. Having said that, your countless examples designed for self propaganda make you in some ways more sad than those who simply know no better.

One of us just chooses not to waste his life trying to prove facts to people who art brainwashed and need a reason to not be afraid of their mortality, he does it briefly and checks back time to time to laugh at the banter much as I do the people who actually think Democrats and Republicans are not on the same side as they laugh at 98% of you behing closed doors drinking fine Brandy together after a day of putting your minds on meaningless things to argue about as they do real damage onto the majority together. They are just like the WWE wrestlers, opponents  fake beat the hell out of one another, actually witnessed that in Pensacola strip club Sammy's one night as The Macho Man and Undertaker laughed and got bloody well drunk together some 2 hours after watching them fight to the death. Enough, you have effectively drawn me into your web of wasted time, back to the real world, supplementing my income on sports...Your examples are impressive if not for the very sad fact that you have wasted just as much time in your life trying to prove something that is common sense and down deep you know it...Carry on with your important work...

It's amazing that a debate so vast can be summed up so succinctly. In order to try and "prove" Christianity and god and what not, believers have to pull in all kinds of "evidence" and appeal to various different "sources," the most important of which isn't even valid. All the atheist has to do is say this: "Look at how difficult it is. Look at the lengths a believer must go to just to justify his faith. All we have to do is look at the world around us and acknowledge it, accept it, accept what we see and what we know; accept the rules that we are bound to in this world (gravity, motion, conservation of energy, etc.). There's no need to justify anything; no need to appeal to prophecies, scriptures, popular belief, etc. All we need is the here and now; the real world. We accept this world as the only world because it is the only world we know. We have no reason to believe there is anything beyond this world; anything supernatural that exists that transcends the laws of reality that define this world. This is it. We accept it."

Once you can accept it, life is a lot easier to live. Everyone should still live life to the fullest and enjoy each day because after this, that's it (unless of course we're reincarnated...but that's ridiculous right?)

Religion is obviously a farce. Don't be afraid of death and let others use this fear against you to control you.

Glad I could clear this up for you guys.
Now let this stupid ass thread die.

In World War II approx. over 60 million people were killed.

In the Korean War it is estimated that 10 million people were killed.

During the Vietnam War approx 5.4 million people were killed.

Those figures above can be looked up and verified as historical facts.

So what are those astounding numbers killed in the name of Christianity (the religion built around Jesus) that can be verified as an historical fact?

Remember this is the no spin zone when spewing out statistics...just the facts and nothing but the facts.

Jesus Christ(pun intended), did you re-read what you wrote.  Seriously, no one here including myself have a clue as to who these people were personally and to state as fact the things you say here sums all of this up in a nutshell. To know these things you must be god, have video evidence or something other then here say. Anyone can write most anything and skew it to their side, happens every day, polls are based on this as is all types of crap. You said and I quote "The numbers killed (cut short in their lifetimes) in the name of Christianity (the religion built up around Jesus) is astounding."...Do you really think this is a one way street? Christianity as it has been created by man in 2011 is nothing like it was in the original days according to so many who say it was the other way around, Christians slaughters millions of innocent people because they did not follow them in the day (so it is said) in the name of what is right. The only difference in your and my statement is the fact that I live in reality and realize I was not there, nor were you or even the professor with his mathematical formula's or anyone else alive today, nor last year, nor last century, on and on and on...it is all hear say. You have no real proof no more then archsage, KittyKatz286 or me. To really have faith in anything is the scientific fact of miracles. The act of faith in anything whether it be Jesus or a tree so long as you have 100% true and undeniable faith backed by consistent action will bring anything (within reason) and the basis for "Jesus miracles", it is your mind, give up the Dogma.

I get it and frankly respect you more much more then people like archsage because you have no doubt and you have put much into faith instead of wasting numerous years looking for proof otherwise compared to what slikstik99 wrote, short, correct and to the point (way smarter than myself writing all this for nothing because it does not matter, I really could be doing something more constructive right now yet like a bad episode of the twilight zone, here I am again, how ridiculous).  The only thing he and I have in common is we both realize Jesus was simply a man and religion is man made (at least I assume he believes this, hard to tell sometimes with all the man made jibberish mixed in what he is about

No matter what anyone says, you and several others here are true believers and I envy you for that and the peace it brings your mind because I was unlucky enough to use common sense and think for myself just how impossible it is that a virgin had a baby who dies and rose from the dead (AGAIN IMPOSSIBLE TO ANYONE WITH AN INKLING OF COMMON SENSE OR JUST PLAIN BRAINWASHED, NO DIFFERENT THEN ANY CULT with the exception of the show Supernatural, love that shoe, Sam, Dean and Cass are great, I recommend watching the re-runs un TBS if you get a chance, tape them if you have to, just as realistic as anything here and frankly much more entertaining) and the peace it brings your mind, no matter how mis-guided and impossible it is.

We are each our own god, we make our breaks through faith in ourselfs, slick tongues like the Jim Bakers of the world and most often who you know, not what, one of the the most prevalent disease's of the U.S. society, but I digress. slikstiks99 is way smarter than I . People like Baker, Hinn and the other Con artists get it, there is no hell (except for some on earth living it now through oppression) so they are getting theirs in the name of god, easiest way to make money in the world. Love Benny Hinn's house, he truly gives to the people LMFAO...If I am wrong may God, Jesus, or whomever strike me down tonight. Sorry guys, do not see that happening so I'll most likely get sucked back in to this drivel tommorrow...

If they called themselves Christians and did bad things then they were hypocrites and are not devout Christians who follow and obey God's Ten Commandments.

God gives everybody free will so He does not control anyone like they are some kind of puppet under His control.

You say God is one of the LEADING causes of death. This could not be further from the truth over the course of humanity

I just love it when the atheist alludes to "common sense" and so called logic by claiming miracles are not possible, logical or common sense. Yet, when the atheist is pushed into a corner they believe something can come from nothing, uncaused.

To be honest, I'm not sure that has anything to do with what I've been saying. The Big Bang theory has nothing to do with the creation of life, but of the Universe itself, from singularity. If one were to make a parallel between the scientific theory and biblical notion, the Big Bang theory would be most likely held within only the first sentence of Genesis:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Because the purpose of Genesis isn't to be a textbook on cosmology, this is the only verse (regarding the beginning of the Universe) that even mentions that topic. Hopefully I answered your question.

Common sense, not wasting one's life as a college professor is what matters, It Free's people up to live life, not waste it arguing such mute points (at least for days if not lifetimes with those you cannot sway.

You can do, and believe as you will. But what matters isn't if one is persuaded into a certain view. It doesn't matter what one believes, or what religion one holds. What matters the most is what is True and what is False. That is logic.

For example, the question "Does a god exist?" has only 2 logical answers (and 3 logically coherent responses, but ignore that for now). The answer could either actually be 'Yes' or 'No'. Because it is a dichotomy, one of those answers are true, and one of those answers are false. No, let me be a little more clear, one of those answers *must* be true, and therefore other answer *must* be false.

Taking logic into account, every single question has dire logical importance, and logic is what governs our very lives. The question "Is Jesus Christ the only way into Salvation (everlasting life)?" is a logical question, with a dichotomy of two possible logical answers, 'Yes' or 'No'. Because of this, and because of the nature of the question itself, it is completely irrational to downplay the significance of the question.

You say that we are "wasting our lives" proving the answers to these questions. But why? Why is that wasting our lives? This is by far, and forgive me if you are offended -- that's not at all my intention, the worst argument I've ever heard a non-Christian give.

Because of logic, the question is undeniably important. It only makes sense then, for someone who claims to know the answer to the question, for that one to strive to make sure everyone else (if they truly care about others) understands both logic and truth.

I'm not posting just to show logical coherence regarding reality. I'm posting because this is an important, life-influencing question that has one true, objective, logical answer.

As far as the "priests" that is not our religion. Try Catholicism and that church has awful problems going on. The personality of a true ideal born again christian would be along the lines Ned Flanders. I understand that is only a cartoon character but it is no doubt what resembles many personalities of a true born again christian. The key word Muffin "born again."

Your family are just christians that are serving themselves and hoping they do enough to go to Heaven and they will be in for a rude awakening if they act as you say. My dad has been referred numerous times to being like flanders from his secular buddies. Now I'm sure to you flanders is a geek and yes he is dorky but I'm mainly charcterizing his personality. I've been a christian since teenage years and have played D-1 ball in your country, partyed, in a frat house, served my country for two terms in afghan, go to concerts like (Tool, Oasis, RHCP, Foo's), play sports and poker, involved in Ti-cats with my dad (Pro CFL team here) and work in a very successful secular ad firm in Toronto with racy ads. Now I feel I'm pretty cool and not your typical dorky christian but all my traits are much like flanders and I would vouch that any TRUE BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN is like this. I'm sry your wife's family is like this because it is unfortunate but know this, they are no better off just because they go to church then any normal secular person if they aren't following the truth.

Unfortunately, it isn't b.s. as far as my life experiences go. I did not form this opinion just after meeting my wifes family. I have MANY stories that have helped me form this opnion....and yes that is waht it is and opinion. I don't think of all Christians like that at all and I don't mean to lump them all in like that. I am generalizing based on my experiences. I mentioned some of my very best friends are Christians. I'm not going to give my life story or anything, but I also had 1 grandmother that was extremely religious and 1 that was atheist. The religious grandmother was the meanest most selfish woman I have probably met. She was also a complete liar. She was hateful toward my mother and my uncle and because of the way she brought them up my Uncle is a complete social retard. My mom has turned out ok I think mainly because she found my dad and his family. My grandmother on his side was atheist, but you absolutely wouldn't find a nicer, more genuine, loving person. So, automatically growing up that stuck in my mind whether it was right or wrong. Then as I grew up I met friends of all types and could care less what color they were, religion, etc. I just found that the people that had their so called religion in their life were just not as genuine, friendly, easy going, etc. This seemed to be the case all through school, college and then the work place. Like I said....right out of college I took some time and waited tables until I found a good job. Ask almost any waiter who they least like to wait on and it is "church people" on Sundays. Most condescending, rude and cheap people you can wait on. They come across like they are "entitled". I then met my wife and her family. As I mentioned they are the biggest liars, hypocrites and judgemental people you can imagine. I also decided since my wife enjoyed church to go with her and give it a try. Went for over a year, was baptized, etc. I was craving knowledge and I wanted answers because I have serious doubts and a billion questions. We had our pastor over. We talked, I asked questions and I still came away realizing.....wow if these people would listen to what they are saying you might realize how crazy some of this stuff sounds. It is so illogical and out there that I just can't understand how so many people accept it as is. If you dissect some of the beliefs and ideals.....it truly makes god come off in a bad light. This supposed "all loving" god is not like that at all. Why would something like going to heaven be such a game? What god would do that? Honestly, what I see out of many many church going people is complete denial. They can say they believe all they want, but deep down they know they really don't know or believe. I want to believe REAL BAD, but I question things and how most of the stuff makes any sense at all. I am not one of those people that feels like we have to have a purpose or there is some GREAT after life. I sure hope there is, but maybe we are just here like all the other animals, insects, vegetation, etc. and once we are gone that is it. I'm not going to live my life as a lie and just accept and have faith in something that basically is only based on a book. I don't know what god would send me to hell just for questioning things. After all, if there is a god he gave me the ability to question things right? Anyway, regardless of everything I know my opinion has just been formed over my lifetime of experiences and in no way includes all Christians or church going people. I respect that everyone elses opinions have also been formed by their upbringing and different circumstances. Bottom line is I have learned a great deal from the discussions, but still come away questioning things more then ever.

This is pretty much what makes the most sense of all, but most people would like to feel that their is some greater purpose in life or maybe they are just scared to die and are hoping there is this heaven they get to go to.

That can explain why people would bother trying to 'prove' that something is true.

But that does nothing to explain if such a thing is logically true or false. Instead of trying to play psychologist, you should concern yourself what is actually logically true or false.

If you would read the Scriptures, you'd see: Reality (Christianity) is not about what you feel. It's always been about what you know. The rise of anti-intellectualism in Western Civilization has come along because of the insurgence of 'new atheism'. Unlike 'old atheism" which was very much concerned with their theology, seeking fervently to understand that logic behind the premises held both within their view and others, new atheism leads to statements that have been displayed here. They attempt to avoid discussion and academia, replacing logical reasoning for ad hominem, rationality for baseless rhetoric, and intelligence for ignorance.

The fact that only one person on this entire thread has even bothered to even listen to what Christianity is, is a testimony to that fact.

Or are you willing to prove that Christ would have been crucified if all people accepted Him? And then you'd have to prove, under Christian coherency, why Christ would come at a time of the most wicked generation of person until then.

I do not appreciate anti-intellectualism. If you don't know much about Christianity, please allow for someone who does to teach on the matter. Lest you begin to preach falsities to the posters here, spreading not only ignorance but erroneous knowledge.

BTW, KittyKatz, I'm still waiting for you to respond to post #966, so we can continue our discussion. It seems that the civility of this thread is wavering if we do not continue.

Think about the whole premise of him dying for our sins. Why and how in the world does that make any sense? I just can't "intellectually" understand how that makes any sense at all. Open your mind and really think about it.

Also,  I will apologize for my "anti-intellectualism" and will not spread "falsities and erroneoues" knowledge anymore....if you can apologize for being close minded and passing something as fact when it is not. Otherwise, get off your high horse and tone down the condescending attitude. All I'm doing is asking questions and hoping for good answers to enlighten me.

You've never understood that? If you don't know what that is, then you have never knew what Christianity is. This is what I mean by "ignorance". I've talked with a lot of atheists before. And what separates one atheist from the next, is whether they are ignorant or not. How can you be against Christianity, and not even know what it is? Hmm...

Anyway, as for your question: who or what created God?

This question stems from a misconception. God was not created. If you don't understand how silly this question sounds, try to ask yourself the question, "who or what created values?"

First off, I am not against Christianity at all. I'm against people passing it off as fact and not opening their mind to the realization that what they might believe in is not reality. I don't consider myself atheist, Christian, Catholic or anything other then a person that has A LOT of questions and doubts about God, Jesus and religion in general.

How silly the question is? Why? As far as values are concerned.....that is determined by each individual, but shaped by the society you live in.

I numbered your paragraphs so that my response would be easier to understand.

    (1) You're saying that you are against people confidently believing something to be true?

    (2) Values are not determined by an individual. Values just are, and they aren't created. For example, "nothing" and "something" are both values. Numbers, like 1, 2, 3, etc. all refer to values (though the numbers themselves are not values). Asking "who or what created values" is silly in and of itself. Because values are not created. They simply are.

    1. Believing something to be true is a lot different then expressing it as a fact. If you say "I believe" then that is your opinion and that is fine. If you say "I know for a fact" then you would be lying. This is all my opinion and how I feel, so it's kind of useless to go back and forth on this. I don't know if there is a god for sure or not. In going by everything I have heard and read it seems much more logical that there is not. However, ultimately nobody knows for sure, so I could be wrong.

    2. I'm just going to have to completely disagree with you on values. IMO each person, family, government, etc. have different sets of values depending on what you feel is most important in your life. I really don't even understand what you are saying about values just being there. Through life experiences, watching reading, etc. I have formed a set of values that I live by as have you. Your values it would appear seem to be involved with a church and religion. I mean.....what do you do for fun? or on weekends, how do you treat people, would you prefer to help a homeless man or a wounded puppy along a road? It depends on your values or how you feel. This is getting off topic though, so I better just stop.

Don't come on this thread and say things that you can't back up as an historical fact after you say it is based on a historical fact...I mean who wants to read your made up garbage?

God is eternal, He was not created, He has no beginning or no end, He is everlasting.

I know in your narrow mindedness you will not initially understand how this could be...give yourself time, then perhaps someday you will except this to be true.

You will begin to understand that the only way anything could have possibly began to exist is because there must have been something or someone who has always existed.
