BRUSSELS (AP) — Nearly two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, the world raced Friday to contain a new coronavirus variant potentially more dangerous than the one that has fueled relentless waves of infection on nearly every continent.
A World Health Organization panel named the variant “omicron” and classified it as a highly transmissible virus of concern, the same category that includes the predominant delta variant, which is still a scourge driving higher cases of sickness and death in Europe and parts of the United States.

Eventually it's going to reach every nation. Meticulous travel bans will certainly help slow the spread, but once it reaches a country, further spread will only be stopped by strict mitigation measures. It appears current trump-vaccines -- which were only developed for the ORIGINAL STRAIN of covid-19 (2 years ago, before multiple mutations) may only have limited effectiveness - though this remains to be seen either way.

Too early to say, but if the experts are seriously concerned we certainly shouldn't dismiss it.

'trump's-toilet' worshippers and assorted conspiracy theorists are already
claiming the new variant - which emerged in South Africa and has
spooked investors around the world - is all Joe Biden's fault.
And they also blame Liz Cheney, Nancy Pelosi, and the entire jury of the
white nationalist trial in Charlottesville.
Europa is right. Stronger evidences in favor of vaccines found over time. Public health experts consider world vaccination the only way out of pandemic. As long as virus spread, it can continue to mutate. Anti-viral drugs complement but aren't substitutes for vaccines. Vaccination is the safest and fastest way to build immunity in large population. Despite infections, serious illness is largely preventable by vaccination.
According to Imperial college london, extremely unlikely new vaccines don't work against new variants of coronavirus. Although some new variants appear initially alarming, they didn't spread far. Too early to know whether omicron is more deadly or not. Historically, pandemics usually last for several years with multiple waves of infections. So reimposing public health restrictions is following science. Eventually, pandemics become endemic when hospitals are no longer overwhelmed. Since mask wearing has proven to be so effective worldwide, it should be the last precaution lifted in the future.

Biden, World health organization and John Hopkins university realize that travel bans have limited usefulness. Every country imposed travel restrictions although they do little more than temporarily delay worldwide pandemic. Despite travel restrictions, thousands of people still travelled from China or Europe to the US. Using a travel ban to stop a respiratory virus is like playing goalie in soccer and having 30 people shoot pucks at you at the same time. As long as virus spread, it can continue to mutate. Big panic over a new variant and punishing of countries that report it. But no panic over 3+ billion people in countries with poor access to vaccines?
