THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — With each passing hour, new restrictions
were being slapped on travel from countries in southern Africa as the
world scurried Saturday to contain a new variant of the coronavirus that
has the potential to be more resistant to the protection offered by vaccines.

A host of countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada Iran, Japan, Thailand
and the United States, joined others, including the European Union and
the U.K. in impose restrictions on southern African countries in response to
warnings over the transmissability of the new variant.

This is scary stuff & testing the ability of the brightest scientists in the world.

Unvaccinated people in the US are at a 14 times greater risk of dying from covid-19 than those who are fully vaccinated against coronavirus,

Unvaccinated individuals are also almost six times as likely to test positive for the virus.

Genome sequencing is being performed in several "advanced" countries, South Africa being one of them. They may have found Omicron but it probably didn't start there. Takes time to genome sequence so this variant has had a head start. The most used PCR test fails to see the S-gene with Omicron because it is not there with this mutation. They are now using the PCR test to easily identify the Omicron based on this missing gene showing up in the test.

So far symptoms are reported to be heavy fatigue and symptoms are reported to be mild compared to Delta. Children appear to be more susceptible to this variant. Concern is what it will do to the elderly and immune compromised, same as the original virus.

With 30 mutations to the spike protein, same protein the vaccine is based on, it may make the current vaccine useless. Can't have that, can we. Let's see how long it takes to recognize that.

Travel ban from Biden is ridiculous with our southern border wide open to caravans of foreigners. NPR reported in June that hundreds of Africans made their way to South America and are crossing our border. Am sure that number grows daily. 

It will get here just like Delta, just like the original COVID. So we can now blame Biden and the democrats for killing thousands more than Trump. After all, two completely different variants will have started overseas, been identified, and still were allowed into our country by this administration.

Despite the shutdown of flights, there was increasing evidence that the
variant has already spread.  Cases have been reported in travelers in
Belgium, Israel and Hong Kong, and Germany also has a probable case.

Dutch authorities are checking for the new variant after
61 passengers on two flights from South Africa tested positive.

My neighbor was fully vaccinated against the measles, but still got infected...........with whooping cough.

Highly unlikely current vaccines don't work on omichron variant according to National institute of health.  Booster shots can help increase immunity.  Improving vaccination worldwide is the best way to stop new variants emerging.  However Journal of emergency management warns that travel bans become ineffective in curbing virus spread.  World health organization cautions against travel bans since they may do more harm than good. 

Why did Democrats call Trumps travel ban racist but don’t say anything when Biden does it?

According to politifact, Biden calls Trump xenophobic because of his record of hysteria, racism and fear mongering.  For example, immigration visa policy that discriminates against Muslim countries.  Trump's use of words such as "China virus."  Not to travel restrictions themselves.  Biden doesn't trust Trump but he supports travel restrictions when advocated by medical experts.  Also he trusts vaccines if approved by Food drug administration.  As a precaution, he takes every measure to keep Americans safe and defeat the pandemic.

Trump had travel bans to and from advanced Europeon countries and China and the Left goes nuts, Biden picks out poor African nations. Yet nothing on our southern border!

Travel restrictions, or even travel bans, don't actually PREVENT a virus from entering the country but they can significantly reduce and slow the spread.  It is prudent to take pre-emptive measures (cautiously) when it concerns public safety.

So shut the boarders down, restrict all international travel. Hell, might as well restrict all travel. Let's get 2 more weeks to slow the spread. If Biden doesn't shut down all travel then this new variant and what happens is all his fault, right?

good pt fubah .     the best way to beat the virus is now is to immunize through full vaccination plus masking and social distancing .  that has always been the case since early 2020 and it still is .
