Great point, Kells!

Adding the third shot clearly is effective against Omicron as well, with National Institutes of Health data on the Pfizer vaccine showing that protection after three doses can reach about 80% effectiveness. Preliminary data from Imperial College London on both mRNA vaccines used in the US places the protection from a third dose between 55% and 80%.

In the last few weeks, reacting both to Omicron and clear evidence of fading immunity to the Delta variant after six months, public health authorities strongly encouraged the already vaccinated to receive a third dose -- the booster -- pronto. 55-80% is workable.
I still think a newer vaccine is needed.

Millions of US workers are already required to show proof of a Covid vaccine to their employer. Soon many could be forced to show proof that they also got a booster shot.
With the rise of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, public health officials are stressing that a booster shot is more important than ever. Many who got their initial vaccine dose or doses more than six months ago could have limited protection against the easily transmissible Omicron.
"Omicron has turned this undoubtedly into a three-dose vaccine, if it wasn't heading that way already,"Andy Slavitt, a former senior pandemic adviser to President Joe Biden, told CNN last week. "Two doses just aren't going to be sufficient any longer. If everybody is boosted, that's your best shot at having everyone back [in the office]."

The latest wave of Covid-19 cases is "unlike anything we’ve ever seen," doctor says
This latest wave of Covid-19 cases is “unlike anything we’ve ever seen,” Dr. James Phillips, chief of disaster medicine at George Washington University Hospital, said Wednesday.
“While many of us were able to stay safe from getting the Delta virus and the previous variants that have come our way, Omicron is affecting the staff at our hospitals in an unprecedented way,” Phillips said. “We're really struggling to maintain our workforce, particularly of nurses right now. And that makes wait times even longer in the waiting rooms, and it's very demoralizing for both the patients and our staff.”

A doctor in Maryland said he had to cancel potentially life-saving monoclonal antibody infusions for about 250 people over the last week after the federal government stopped distributing treatments made by Regeneron and Eli Lilly because they aren't effective against omicron, even though the delta variant, which the drugs are effective at treating, was still dominant at the time.
The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response halted the allocation of those two antibody treatments last Thursday amid the rise of omicron, which the CDC had said days earlier was responsible for 73.2% of all new cases.
But the CDC backtracked on that alarming estimate this week, revising it down to just 22.5% for the week ending Dec. 18, more than a 50-point drop.
The delta variant, which Regeneron and Eli Lilly's treatments are effective against, was actually responsible for 77% of all new cases when the federal government stopped distributing those antibody drugs.
Now, one doctor says the government's massive miscalculation cost lives.
"I am as angry as I possibly can be about this," Dr. Ron Elfenbein, the medical director and CEO of FirstCall Medical Center in Gambrills, Maryland.
"The fact that these people are so adamant that they're right when they're using faulty data and they're using faulty logic and frankly statistical modeling that has never been correct, ever, throughout this entire pandemic, to look at this, is just beyond the pale…. People are definitely going to die because of this or need hospitalization because [health officials] misread the statistics."

Immunity wanes against Omicron variant with both Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, study finds
CNN HEALTH - Immunity wanes against the Omicron variant of the coronavirus with both the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines – but not as much as it wanes after a natural infection researchers reported Friday.
And they say their findings show the need for vaccines that specifically protect against Omicron.

that last point is the key . we need a new vaccine for omicron the current vaccine is better than nothing for sure but nowhere near as effective as it was against the 2020 version of the virus

i agree
we absolutely do need a new vaccine
but until we get one the current one will have to do and is still fairly effective with boosters added

Well that's just it. The vaccine developed in late 2020 was engineered for the Wuhan viral strain, not Delta or Omicron. We can't expect it to be every bit as effective as it used to be against the 2019-2020 version of the virus before multiple mutations.
But in the absence of anything better that can easily be administered very cheaply to millions a day then the current vaccine will have to do.
The new pills hold some promise too!

These stats are inspite of the fact that the effectiveness of the vaccine wanes after several months without a booster and even with a booster is still not near as effective as it was early in 2021 against the initial WUHAN strain of the virus.

Just like 99% are the unvaccinated statement made in late July, another lie in the face of overwhelming evidence.
Iceland data shows for the first time vaccinated infection rate has blown by the unvaccinated. Hospitalization rates for the unvaccinated at 3.5 higher than vaxed. Those with boosters seeing a sudden increase in cases and hospitalizations.
Probably still using data from Jan 1.

Portugal, the "standard" for fully vaccinated countries, since June 1st has had one death for every 180 cases. In comparison Alaska has had one death in every 160 cases since June 1st.
20 times for fatality my azz.
China Virus xenophic, Wahun Strain totally OK. Both land masses. Go figure.

YES! This is what I've been saying for several months.
FULLY Vaccinated was 91-95% *PROVEN* effective against the *ORIGINAL* Wuhan strain in early 2021.
But since then the virus has mutated very significantly TWICE!
So of course the vaccine won't be near as effective! It wasn't developed against Omicron!
NOBODY IN AMERICA IS FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST DELTA or OMICRON, because vaccines developed specifically to battle Delta or Omicron do not exist yet, and might never.
But the idiots still don't understand this.

I see there are over 2400 hospital beds in RI and as of 2 days ago 317 COVID patients, 44 in ICU. A 76.4% vaccinated state.
