3rd place game - Brazil / Netherlands - OVER 3 -108 (4 units) -
Anyone who has been around here long enough knows what happens in third place games. I was really surprised to see 3 - although this game in particular has some great undertones - I fully expect a training field exercise and many goals to be scored (again).
Bet it early and often....

To bet over 3 goals, you'd better hope Brazil to score all of the 4 goals against these sloppy orange shirts. This Dutch bunch would probably lay a big fat egg again on Saturday, these orange f**** did mostly pass the ball backward to their defenders and goalie through out the game in the semi against Argentines.
You are quite correct in saying that inexplicably the Dutch acted like they were playing the entire game so they could lose on penalties.
I'm very disappointed that they weren't more aggressive.
However, this game has always had a "last day of school" feeling about it, and it is not important to either side in the context that they both just blew a chance to get to the World Cup Final.
This game is FIFA's answer to The Pro Bowl.

Go back to when you were on the hot seat. You said you were leaving the corporate world to be a professional gambler. So is it fair to assume that one unit is much larger than the average better? You seemed willing to wager a unit on a game that could go either way. Means nothing to me Van and like you said most people blew their wad chasing in the first round.
So did you go back to the corporate world, I hope not it sucks.
Its been a fantastic tournament with what I believe are the two best teams, but not by much.
BOL
I bet 1 unit on a game that was a 50/50 (accurately predicted) but they were giving me +128. I will do that all day long.
I left the corporate world many years ago - and I don't see a return. Just not my thing.

Well rangerz: -250 at +.5 goals! I stand corrected!!! A historic beat down applarently means little here. Still, I'd be willing to take the Brazil +120 in regulation.
Figgety, honestly, you've come this far and you have Germany at 4-1, given everything that is transpired, I'd let it ride and forgo all the needless deposit bonuses and rollovers (which are meant to keep you gambling with the intent of betting it all and losing it).
The 4-1 is just too good and has a nice payout with what is the best tournament team right now. I didn't hedge a single dollar of my spurs series bets with longer odds than that and was rewarded handsomely. I'd let it ride but I wouldn't fault you for hedging if you want to be conservative. Hope this helps.

Now we all know, Vanz, that was a goal around the 74 minute mark. I still can't believe the call. Yes it is a part of soccer but that was not even close. The play was set up by the brilliance of Messi; as he was getting tackled and falling out of bounds he made a beautiful flick pass (so subtle and graceful that it almost went unnoticed) to his teammate and the break was on. Then a beautiful pass into the box by that teammate and an amazing goal by Higuaine, which was taken away. Now maybe the Dutch come back after that, who knows, but it would have been a great finish. The worst part is, not only were they robbed of winning that game in regulation but now their chances against Germany are severely diminished, all because of a side judge who is obviously blind!

That wasn't an offsides call, the ball never went in. From the angle shown on live TV, it certainly looked like it went in, but it actually hit the top of the side netting and came down., so looked like a goal, but never was. The ESPN announcers never referenced it properly after that. I had to go back and double check, and sure enough it did not go in. I had to check Univision's website and watch the highlights to confirm.

Why are their chances diminished? They won't play until Sunday. Isn't 3 days enough time to recover from an OT and shootout match?

Wow! This is new to me, BK. Guys on tv called it a goal and it looked like a goal. Must be a great optical illusion then. Please attach any links you have as I erased the game.

Yeah, it was weird and I was at work watching on my computer, so yesterday had no way of going back, but had the discussion with someone else who said it never went in. Checked it out today and found some clear replays backing that up. Announcers (on ESPN) even did say something about the sidenettting.
Use this link for the highlights, after the ad it's like the first highlight they show. (although covers might take this down and spank me for posting it)
Although the link to his highlight reel doesn't show the offside flag, the Univision highlights briefly did. So I do think he did mess up the call, albeit a moot point.
And watching the highlights again, wow did Robben have a chance late to put one in, just one touch too many and never got a shot off. They could have stolen that one!

BK is right, it wasn't a goal. ESPN Sportscenter later showed that it wasn't a goal with better angles. Even Higuain knew it wasn't a goal by his reaction.

Yeah, he knew, which is why there was no argument. Plus the Dutch put the ball back in play very quick, so things just moved on and that sequence was forgotten. It all happened very quickly. Nevertheless, no argument on the ball from Messi, that was top notch.

Thanks, fellas, I appreciate it! Vanz, you were right! 50/50 game.
I don't know what that mastermind coach was thinking, letting a defender take the 1st pk, it was a disaster waiting to happen. I just did a long write-up on the 3rd place game, in case anyone is interested:

WC Final - Germany / Argentina - Germany to win in 90 minutes +130 (2 units), Germany to win WC -150 (2 units) - I heard Ian Darke say "this is a great World Cup without a great team" - and I really agree. If you have a short memory - you might think Germany has been dominant, but they haven't been. They very easily could have lost to Algeria, and were taken to the limit in their draw against Ghana.
But since the Algeria match they have made 2 changes that seem to have made all the difference - along with the emergence of a key player. They took out Mertesacker and put Lahm back to his normal role in the defense to replace him. Lahm was nothing short of terrible in the first four matches in midfield - but his change back to defense resulted in two successive (basically) shutouts against Brazil and France. Also key was the introduction of Klose - not so much because he has been spectacular because he has been pretty average - but it gives Germany's opposition a harder shape to defend - which plays in to the strength of Germany - the almost unstoppable midfield. So even if Klose is just a decoy - it draws defenders away from the real threats. Also - Khedira - who was really bad at the beginning of the tournament - has really come around and is playing much better. Don't know if that was fitness or just improvement- but it has had a huge impact.
I expect Germany to play exactly as they have played the last two games, with a very high defensive line - and Neuer playing "sweeper keeper". This can be beat by speed and so I do expect Argentina to employ their fastest options at wing (like Aguerro) and maybe even sit Messi a little bit deeper to try and feed through balls up and over or through the high defensive German back line.It is a shame for Argentina that DiMaria is out – I really think he is the type of player that can have a big impact against Germany.
Argentina has looked very pedestrian in their buildup to this game.I almost say that apologetically – because I know that they have not reached their full potential – but there are some weaknesses – mainly on defense that can be exploited. But in a one game series – which this is – there is no way of arguing that Argentina at their best cant easily win this game. There is no need to talk any more about “messi dependence” because it got them this far and they are going to try it again I am sure – but I do think his role will be different – much more as a playmaker than a scoring threat. The key to this game for Argentina – more than any other they have played – is to be able to get players in and behind the German defense.Messi will find them.He is a master at the perfectly weighted through ball.
I just think with all things considered – for one game – Germany just have more options to win than Argentina. If the midfield trio of Germany get going – and they are able to keep possession and frustrate Argentina – they should get plenty of chances. My fear is that Argentina come out and play like they did against the Netherlands – slow it down – and play physical – just to limit Germany possessions and chances – but I still see Germany able to overcome that and force the tempo. It will be a grind down sort of effort from the Germans – with lots of possession leading to lots of Argentine frustration leading to probably a late goal or two. I do think the bettors have made this line too low for Germany – because of short term memory issues with gamblers – but I cant get away from the simple fact that I think Germany has too many ways to win this game.Predicted final score Germany 2 Argentina 1 in 90 mins.
