Blue Jays vs Yankees Picks and Predictions: Hot Offenses, Struggling Pitchers Scream Over

The Blue Jays offense has stormed back to life, riding a sweep of the A's into a key three-game set against the Yankees in the Bronx. For as hot as Toronto has been, New York is coming in flat and wounded — getting the Jays at plus-money is a no-brainer.

It’s a holiday baseball afternoon as the Toronto Blue Jays visit the New York Yankees in a game with big playoff implications.

The Jays are fresh off a sweep of Oakland while the Yankees come into the series having lost two of three to Baltimore. South Korean Hyun Jin Ryu will get the ball for the visiting Jays while the Yankees will counter with Jameson Taillon. Toronto is riding a four-game winning streak and is four games back from the final Wild Card spot.

New York opened as -140 MLB betting favorites but that number has moved south to -127. The total sits at 9.5 shaded to the Over.

Here are our free picks and predictions for Blue Jays vs. Yankees on Monday, September 6, with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. ET.

Starting pitchers

Hyun Jin Ryu (12-8, 3.92 ERA): The former Cy Young runner-up has fallen on hard times, having given up 10 runs over his last two starts. Ryu owns a 4.62 ERA in the second half and has a road ERA of 4.46 — compared to 3.36 at home. Despite recent performances, the Toronto lefty has held the Yankees to a 2.50 ERA over three starts this season and Toronto is 2-1 in those starts.

Jameson Taillon (8-5, 4.44 ERA): Taillon comes into this Labor Day start also in a bit of a funk, coughing up 11 runs over his last two outings. He’s picked up just one win over his last six starts and after being named the AL Pitcher of the Month in July, posted a 5.56 ERA in August. Taillon has faced the Jays once this year, giving up five runs over 3 2-3 innings of work.

Moneyline pick

The Yankees may have a 4.5-game lead over the Jays in the Wild Card race, but they come into this pivotal series having dropped two straight series and are 2-6 in their last eight — and losing two of three to the last-place Orioles is not ideal when fighting for a playoff berth.

The home team could be looking at a three-game losing streak if Jameson Taillon doesn’t start pulling his weight in the rotation. He hasn’t made it to the fifth inning in back-to-back starts and has given up 11 runs, five walks, and three home runs over that stretch. The Toronto offense is finally catching fire, having scored at least eight runs in three straight games and may have no problem disposing of Taillon early — just as it did earlier in the season when they potted five runs in less than four innings off the New York starter.

The New York bullpen has also looked subpar in back-to-back games, picking up both losses against Baltimore. The New York pen owns a near-5.00 ERA over the last week and has been saddled with three losses. Star reliever Jonathan Loaisiga is injured, Chad Green pitched two innings yesterday, and Aroldis Chapman is struggling again — if the Jays get to the late innings and find themselves trailing, a come-from-behind win is definitely in play.

Toronto's offense is back to what it used to be after a brief detour down struggle street. The Jays totaled 29 runs over their three-game set versus the A's and are riding the momentum of their most dramatic win of the season on Friday — when they erased a six-run deficit in the eighth, gave up two runs in the top of the ninth, and then walked it off in the bottom.

Both teams need to win, but Toronto is slightly more desperate and the team knows it. Getting Hyun Jin Ryu and this offense at plus money is a treat — and something that hasn’t happened since July 29.

PREDICTION: Toronto (+105)

Over/Under pick

The Jays are 4-12 O/U in their last 16 games but that won’t deter us from banging the Over on Monday afternoon, as plenty of things are lining up for the more public play.

Both starting pitchers come into this match struggling and in poor form. Ryu has given up three or more runs in three straight games while Taillon has also been hit hard of late, having allowed three runs in four of his last five. This is not a battle of two starters in top form.

This will be the seventh meeting in New York and although the Over has yet to hit in the Bronx, it’s definitely due. Both offenses are coming off big games, both starters are in brutal form and each bullpen has collapsed of late.

Ballparkpal has Yankee Stadium as a positive-run stadium with a +0.96 total-bases effect. We might not be doing anything on Labor Day, but we're definitely sitting back and watching a pair of loaded offenses put in work against some struggling starting pitching.

PREDICTION: Over 9.5 (-115)
