Starting pitchers
Charlie Morton (13-5, 3.49 ERA): Morton has given up two or fewer runs in seven of his last 10 starts, and it’s no coincidence that he recently inked a $20-million extension with Atlanta. The veteran is really in a nice groove at the moment and he now hits the road, where he is 8-2 with a 2.91 ERA on the year.
Alex Wood (10-4, 4.08 ERA): Wood struggled a little towards the end of July and beginning of August, but he has allowed just two earned runs in each of his last three trips to the hill. The lefty struck out 20 batters over those three outings, and he’ll be hoping to give San Francisco another productive start here. For what it’s worth, the Giants have won in six of his last seven starts.

Moneyline pick
The Giants are normally a great bet when going against right-handed starters, but that’s not the case with Morton on the mound. In 13 career starts against San Francisco, Morton has a 2.48 ERA and has allowed just six homers over 83.1 innings of work. Career splits don’t mean a lot against teams that change pretty frequently, but the Giants have had the same core for quite some time now. Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford are a combined 12 for 45 with just one homer and two RBIs against Morton. Those are three of the most important hitters San Francisco has, and none of them can possibly feel great about what they’ve done against Morton to this point.
Also, the Giants are very much dependent on hitting home runs, as they have been the best power-hitting team in baseball this season. However, the Giants also strike out more than all but six teams in baseball, and they have one of the 10 worst strikeout rates in baseball this year. That’s going to come back to bite them in a meeting with Morton, who is tied for 10th in the league in strikeouts this season. He has some of the best swing-and-miss stuff in the game and should turn in a great start here.
Offensively, the Braves have what it takes to get enough runs off of Wood, too. Against lefties this season, Atlanta is 12th in the league in slugging percentage and fourth in isolated power. Even with some big-time bats out for the year, there’s more than enough offensive talent remaining in this lineup.
PREDICTION: Braves ML (+115)
Over/Under pick
The Under is 9-2 in Atlanta’s last 11 road games and it’s also 5-2 in San Francisco’s last seven games when playing as a home favorite. Last night’s game was also on pace for another Under before a ninth-inning collapse by the Giants. Now, expect this series to get back to being a low-scoring one, as there will be two good pitchers on the mound tonight. Morton has been on a tear entering this start, and he has also been great against the Giants in his career.
Meanwhile, Wood could struggle a bit more than usual after having dealt with an illness over the last few weeks, but it’s hard to envision him doing much worse than three or four earned runs over five or so innings.
PREDICTION: Under 8.0 (-110)
