Padres vs Giants Picks and Predictions: SD's Struggles vs Winning Teams Continues Monday Night

The Giants try to maintain their NL West lead Monday when they host the Padres, who are fighting for the final Wild Card spot. San Diego is sending out its ace — but considering Yu Darvish's struggles recently, we're leaning with San Fran at home tonight.

Padres vs Giants betting preview

Starting pitchers

Yu Darvish (8-9, 3.95 ERA): The five-time All-Star looked like an ace at the beginning of the year but has struggled since the start of July, pitching to a 6.84 ERA with 1.28 WHIP over his last 10 starts. That said, Darvish is coming off a strong outing against the Angels where he scattered three hits and one run across six innings.

Dominic Leone (3-3, 1.48 ERA): The right-hander will serve as the opener in what is expected to be a bullpen game for San Fran. Leone has a 1.05 WHIP and an opponent batting average of .170 in 42 2-3 innings this season, most of which have come out of the bullpen. Leone worked as an opener just three days ago, pitching two perfect innings against the Cubs.

Betting trend to know

The Giants are 38-14 in their last 52 games versus a right-handed starter. Find more MLB betting trends for Padres vs. Giants.

Moneyline pick

The Giants have won seven games in a row as they maintain their lead on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Padres sit a whopping 18.5 games behind the Giants in the division standings but they remain in the postseason picture as they are currently tied with the Cincinnati Reds for the final Wild Card spot.

The Padres have a dangerous lineup, featuring Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, but they rank a modest 17th in the majors with an OPS of .721 and have been even worse lately, posting an OPS of just .667 over the last 15 days.

The Giants are fourth in the majors with an OPS of .814 over that span and are also fourth in the majors in OPS over the entire season at .772.

The Padres will send Yu Darvish to the rubber and while the right-hander has a fantastic track record over his career, he has struggled lately — especially on the road, where he has a 5.40 ERA. With Alex Wood and Johnny Cueto on the IL, the Giants will have a bullpen game today but considering their relievers collectively pitch to an MLB-best 3.04 ERA and 1.09 WHIP, they should be in good hands.

With the Padres just 2-8 in their last 10 games against teams with a winning record, fade them against the Giants tonight.

PREDICTION: San Francisco (-110)

Over/Under pick

Darvish is coming off an excellent performance against the Angels but has been very inconsistent over the last couple of months and the Friars are 14-5 O/U in his last 19 starts.

As a matter of fact, Darvish has surrendered at least four runs in seven of his last 10 starts — including a handful of rough outings against the league's worst offenses in the Diamondbacks, Rockies, Marlins, and Nationals.

Now, Darvish will have to face off against a San Francisco lineup that has sizzled at the plate recently. The Giants are averaging 8.86 runs per game over their last seven games and have cashed the Over in five of those contests.

With the Over also hitting in five straight meetings in the head-to-head between these NL West rivals, back it again tonight.

PREDICTION: Over 8 (-115)
