Today’s best MLB prop bets
Juan's world
Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto began the 2022 MLB season as the betting favorite to win the National League MVP award and while he isn’t tearing the cover off the ball quite yet, he had a solid start to the year. He’ll look to keep that up when he and the Nats open a series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates and give us some value when it comes to his total bases prop.
Soto is hitting .280 with a .920 OPS over his first seven games and he continues to crush right-handed pitching. A year after hitting .333 with a .1.073 OPS when facing righties, Soto has picked up where he left off going 6-17 (.353) with two dingers against right-handers through this early portion of the season.
And of course, he faces a right-hander tonight in the Pirates JT Brubaker. Brubaker’s season started on a sour note — getting tuned for four runs on four hits and three walks — which included two extra-base hits in just three innings of work against the St. Louis Cardinals on Opening Day.
While the Pirates bullpen has been a pleasant surprise, they have already logged 22 2-3 innings through five games.
Soto has only faced Brubaker three times in his career and has recorded one hit. With the way he locks in on right-handers combined with the plus money, we love Soto’s chances to go Over his total bases tonight.
Pick: Juan Soto Over 1.5 total bases (+130)
Prize winner Perez
It feels like the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals will duke it out for who is the better up-and-coming team in the American League Central this season. But both are looking to build some momentum heading into this four-game set.
The Tigers have lost four of five, while the Royals have dropped three in a row. Detroit hands the ball to right-hander Casey Mize for the opener and he knows he’ll be in for a tough night against a patient Royals lineup, and more specifically, against Salvador Perez.
The Royals catcher is coming off an incredible season where he led the Big Leagues with 48 home runs and the ageless wonder has carried that over into 2022 already whacking two dingers this year. While he’s only 4-for-20 to start this season, this matchup against Mize might be exactly what he needs to get rolling at the dish.
Perez has owned Mize during his short time in the majors, going 7-for-15 (.467) against him with a home run and a double.
Mize is also coming off a rough first outing of the season against the Chicago White Sox, giving up four runs on seven hits in just five innings of work.
But the big problem for Mize in this matchup with Perez is that the right-hander pitches to a lot of contact. He has struck out 7.2 batters per nine innings and allows 8.1 hits per nine innings over the course of his short career.
And unfortunately for him, Perez makes a lot of hard contact. Bet on the Royals backstop to make some noise here and go Over his total bases prop.
Pick: Salvador Perez Over 1.5 total bases (+100)
Buehler's Day On
Ask and you shall receive. More sportsbooks appear to be posting outs recorded player props for starting pitchers and I’ve found one I like as Walker Buehler takes the mound when the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night. That is, as long as Dave Roberts doesn’t get in the way.
The Dodgers manager made headlines on Wednesday after pulling Clayton Kershaw from a game after seven innings, despite having a perfect game going on just 80 pitches. But Kershaw is getting older, has an injury history, and it was a cold day in Minnesota. Here’s hoping Buehler can be efficient in the comforts of Dodger Stadium tonight.
The right-hander — who is one of my favorite bets to win the National League Cy Young Award in 2022 — got off to a so-so start against the Rockies needing 78 pitches to get through five innings. But he allowed just two runs on four hits.
However, Buehler’s always had his issues at Coors Field and this is a guy who finished fourth in Cy Young voting last season after going 16-4 with a 2.47 ERA, and a 0.97 WHIP while striking out over 200 batters.
Now, he gets a matchup against a Reds offense that has really stumbled out of the gates to start the season. They are hitting just .176 against right-handed pitching this season with a 0.541 OPS. That’s the worst mark in the MLB.
Buehler also made two starts against the Reds last season. One good. One not so good. But he pitched six innings in each, and Buehler has been one of baseball’s better innings eaters — pitching six or more innings 29 times in his 33 starts last season. Take the Over on his outs recorded here and tell Dave Roberts to stay out of our way.
Pick: Walker Buehler Over 16.5 outs recorded (-125)
