Today’s best MLB prop bets
Pivetta punch-out party
Powered by a Josh Donaldson walk-off single in the 11th inning, the New York Yankees rallied to beat the Red Sox last night.
That storied rivalry continues today with Nick Pivetta taking the mound for Boston. Pivetta had an up-and-down season with the Bo-Sox last year but the veteran had a solid 64.3 strike percentage and fanned 175 batters in 155 innings.
In his previous start against the Yankees last September, Pivetta scattered three hits and allowed one across 5 2/3 innings while striking out seven. The Yankees struck out an absurd 15 times yesterday. While that number is certain to regress over time, they also finished last season 25th in the majors in strikeout percentage — fanning on 24.5% of all plate appearances.
Pivetta looked sharp in spring training, striking out 22 batters in 15.2 innings, and we like the righthander to go Over 5.5 strikeouts today.
Pick: Nick Pivetta Over 5.5 strikeouts (+120 at Caesars)
Trea turns up
We've got the Los Angeles Dodgers hitting in Coors Field against German Marquez tonight which sounds like the perfect storm for plenty of runs. The Dodgers scored five runs in their season opener last night and managed that despite stranding 22 runners on base and not hitting a single home run.
Dodgers infielder Trea Turner struck out twice in the contest and went just 1-5 at the plate but he did drive in a run. Turner should get plenty of opportunities to drive in runs throughout the year as he gets to hit at third in the lineup behind superstars Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman.
Turner has had tons of success at Coors Field in his career, slashing .444/.468/.722 with 11 extra-base hits and 19 RBI in 16 games. He has also hit well in a small sample size against Marquez with three hits and a pair of RBI in five at bats. We like Turner to drive in at least one run today which is paying out at close to even money.
Pick: Trea Turner to record an RBI (-105 at FanDuel)
Velocity Verlander strikes again
One of the most highly-anticipated starts tonight will be made by Astros right-hander Justin Verlander who has played just one game since 2019 after undergoing Tommy John surgery two years ago.
The eight-time All-Star was coming off winning his second AL Cy Young award in 2019 and was incredible that season going 21-6 with a 2.58 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 300 strikeouts in 223 innings.
It might be tough to trust a 39-year-old coming off Tommy John surgery but how he performed during spring training was promising as he allowed two runs through 13.2 innings.
Verlander averaged 94.6 mph on his fastball in 2019 and in his spring training debut against the Cardinals he averaged 94.8 mph on 16 fastballs, topping out at 95.7 mph. If Verlander's velocity is back he should be able to continue throwing at a high level and being 18 months removed from surgery at this point certainly helps.
Today, Verlander and the Astros face off against the Angels. While the Halos have a dangerous lineup they've gotten off to some very slow starts this season, mustering a total of two runs through the first seven innings in the first two games of the year.
We're not sure just how deep Verlander will pitch in this contest as he builds back to a full workload but we like him to allow fewer than 2.5 earned runs.
Pick: Justin Verlander Under 2.5 earned runs allowed (-145 at William Hill)
