Life's a beach

Miami Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara has been the best pitcher in baseball since the middle of May. Full stop. The right-hander will be a great bet to continue this run of dominance when he takes the ball tonight against the Los Angeles Angels.

Alcantara, who will likely be the starter for the National League in the upcoming All-Star Game, has been close to unhittable over his last 10 starts. The 26-year-old is pitching to a 1.47 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .147 batting average over that span.

But maybe the most impressive part has been his durability. Alcantara has pitched at least seven innings in all 10 of those starts, averaging just under eight innings pitcher per start, including three complete games, which is just something you don’t see anymore. The most complete games by a pitcher last season were just three.

Tonight, he’ll be a tough matchup for the struggling Angels’ lineup. In fact, the Halos have arguably been the worst lineup in baseball for over a month. Los Angeles ranks dead last in the MLB in batting average and strikeout rate, and 29th in OPS and wRC+ since June 1.

The Angels will need a prayer tonight against Alcantara — bet on him to pitch deep into another game, and take the Over on his outs recorded prop.

Sandy Alcantara Prop: Over 20.5 outs recorded (-120)

Blue-chipper

The Toronto Blue Jays clearly are having some problems as the All-Star break approaches, but the offense keeps rolling, and whether it's a guy like Alejandro Kirk, Teoscar Hernandez, or Lourdes Gurriel Jr., they continually present us with betting value when it comes to total bases props.

Today, we focus on Gurriel as the Blue Jays continue their series with the Oakland A’s.

Gurriel is known for being a streaky hitter and he is in the middle of one of his hot spells. The Jays outfielder has collected at least one hit in 13 of his last 14 games, hitting .392 with a 1.074 OPS, including eight extra-base hits over that stretch.

Another thing to like about the way Gurriel is swinging it is that he’s doing a great job of recognizing strikes, getting punched out just eight times over the last 14 games.

Tuesday night, he’ll dig in A’s prospect Adrian Martinez. The 25-year-old right-hander is making just his third career start. His first was impressive, giving up just four hits over 5 1-3 against the Detroit Tigers, but followed that up by getting tagged for seven runs on seven hits in 4 2-3 against the Seattle Mariners.

That also means the A’s will likely be happy to get five innings out of Martinez. Then they’ll hand the ball off to a bullpen that ranks 24th in ERA and 28th in WHIP.

With Gurriel going Over his total bases prop eight times over this 14-game stretch, backing him at plus money to keep swinging a hot stick is a good bet.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Prop: Over 1.5 total bases (+115)

Turning up

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Trea Turner had another excellent month at the plate and has carried that over into July. Turner will look to stay hot tonight against Colorado Rockies starter German Marquez.

Turner is coming off a month of June where he hit .315 with a .873 OPS over 26 games, and kicked July off with a bang. Turner has begun the month with a four-game hitting streak where he's 7-16 (.438) with two doubles. Now, he gets to go up against a struggling Marquez.

The Colorado right-hander hasn’t been able to find his All-Star form from a year ago. Marquez is pitching to an expected ERA of 4.89 and allowing a .283 expected batting average to opponents. He's also coming off a start against this same Dodgers team where he lasted just 3 1-3 innings, surrendering five runs on five hits.

Turner went 1-3 with a double against Marquez in that game and is now 4-10 with two doubles while striking out just once in his career vs. Marquez.

With Turner going Over 1.5 total bases three times during his four-game hitting streak, getting him at plus money to do it again in this matchup looks like a solid value.

Trea Turner Prop: Over 1.5 total bases (+110)
