It’s a classic getaway day in MLB and with all 30 teams in action, there are player props to bet on all day long.
Today, we pass the Blue Jays’ total bases prop baton to another red-hot hitter, and we find some value in a pair of strikeout props for a couple of lefties in the Mets' David Peterson and the Dodgers' Tyler Anderson.

Steaming Santiago stays sizzling
So, we are basically playing pass the baton with Toronto Blue Jays’ total bases props as we pick out which red-hot Jay has the best value. Alejandro Kirk and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. have made us a nice profit the last couple of weeks, but in tonight’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, it’s Santiago Espinal’s turn.
The unheralded Blue Jays’ infielder who was known more for his glove than his bat is having a breakout season at the plate. Espinal is hitting .294 with five home runs and 31 RBI this season, but he has taken his game to the next level in June.
He’s hitting .392 with a 1.103 OPS in 13 games this month, going Over 1.5 total bases 10 times over that stretch. We are getting +130 on this bet.
We haven’t even mentioned that he and the Jays are facing Bruce Zimmermann and the O’s tonight. The lefty has struggled this season pitching to a 6.44 expected ERA and is surrendering a .316 expected batting average to opposing teams.
Oh, yeah. Espinal is hitting .364 vs. lefties this season.
Pick: Santiago Espinal Over 1.5 total bases (+130)
Please Peterson, may we have another?
With Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer missing most of the season to this point, it has been guys like David Peterson who have stepped up for the New York Mets’ rotation. He’ll take the ball tonight when the Mets host Corbin Burnes the Milwaukee Brewers.
While it’s Burnes who you’d usually think of in this matchup when it comes to strikeouts, tonight we’re backing Peterson to go over his reasonable K prop of 4.5.
Peterson has done basically everything the Mets have asked of him. Start, come in for long relief, whatever. And he’s been solid in that role. The lefty is pitching to an expected ERA of 3.96 while limiting opponents to a .233 expected batting average.
And even though his strikeout numbers don’t blow you away, they are definitely trending upward. Peterson has punched out 22 batters in his last 22 innings of work and he has recorded six or more strikeouts in three of his last four starts. The one time he didn’t was against the Washington Nationals, one of the teams that strike out the least in baseball.
Then there is the fact the Brewers are struggling against left-handers. Milwaukee ranks 25th in OPS and next-to-last in batting average while facing lefties. The Brewers also rank 23rd in strikeout rate vs. southpaws and rank 24th in strikeouts per game.
If Peterson can get a feel for his nasty slider tonight, he should eclipse this number.
Pick: David Peterson Over 4.5 strikeouts (-106)
Halos be whiffing
Apparently, suiting up for the Los Angeles Dodgers automatically makes you a better pitcher. Because there doesn’t seem to be any way to explain Tyler Anderson’s jump from mediocrity to excellence since joining the Dodgers. The lefty will look to keep dealing when he toes the rubber tonight against the Los Angeles Angels.
Not that the Dodgers’ rotation needed it, but Anderson has given the group another strong piece. The southpaw is pitching to a 3.19 expected ERA while striking out batters at the highest rate of his career, punching out 23.4% of batters faced.
Wednesday night, he’ll take on an Angels team that is going up there and just hacking at the moment. Over the last month (the start of their 14-game losing streak) the Angels have the highest strikeout rate in baseball and rank 24th in k-rate when facing lefties for the season.
And that hasn’t slowed down. In fact, the Angels have averaged 13 strikeouts over the last three games, and their 9.43 strikeouts per game for the season rank next to last in MLB.
Despite Anderson striking out just two batters in his last start, prior to that he recorded six or more Ks in four of his previous six starts, and in the two he didn’t he recorded five. At plus money like this, the Over 5.5 is worth a bet against this swing-happy Halos team.
Pick: Tyler Anderson Over 5.5 strikeouts (+120)
