Starting pitchers
Jordan Montgomery (5-5, 3.47 ERA): Montgomery doesn’t often pitch very late into games, but he has been as steady as can be for the Yankees all year. The lefty has given up one or fewer runs in six of his last seven starts, and he thrives when getting the chance to pitch in night games. On the year, Montgomery is 5-2 with a 2.84 ERA in the evening. He did, however, give up three runs on six hits in just 4.1 innings in an 8-3 loss to the Mets on July 3.
Tylor Megill (2-4, 4.20 ERA): Megill is coming off a start in which he gave up four runs in six innings against the Washington Nationals, and the righty actually struck out eight batters in that game. That was the most strikeouts Megill has recorded in a game since June 29, and he’ll now look to find a way to slow down the Yankees here. Megill has had some trouble with keeping the ball in the park lately, as he has allowed seven homers over the last three games. That will need to change against the Yankees.

Moneyline pick
The Yankees have really been struggling coming into this game, as they have lost six games in a row and 10 of their last 12. The Bronx Bombers had been scorching hot before this recent stretch, so the team was bound to start losing a bit. However, the Yankees now find themselves battling for their AL Wild Card spot again, so they’ll need to turn up the sense of urgency. Fortunately for them, the Mets aren’t playing very well right now either. The Mets have lost four of their last six, and they’re coming off a series loss to the Miami Marlins.
The Yankees might not be sending Gerrit Cole to the mound in this game, but Montgomery is another great option for Aaron Boone’s team. The lefty struggled a bit the last time he faced the Mets, but only six teams in baseball have hit fewer homers off southpaws than the Mets this season. The Mets are also ninth in the league in strikeout rate against lefties, so Montgomery — who doesn’t strike out many batters — might be able to miss more bats than usual here.
Offensively, the Yankees have to like their chances of getting to Megill in this game. The righty has been having a lot of trouble with avoiding the longball lately, and the Yankees have as much power as anybody.
PREDICTION: Yankees ML (-115)
Over/Under pick
The Yankees will probably be able to score four or five runs off of Megill in this game, as the righty has been prone to making mistakes in recent trips to the mound. However, it’s hard to imagine the Yankees exploding offensively, as they have really struggled coming into this one. They’re also facing a team with a relatively decent bullpen, so the Mets shouldn’t give up much after Megill heads to the dugout.
At the same time, Montgomery should be able to get the job done against the Mets. The Mets have been miserable on offense all year, and they aren’t particularly great against lefties.
