The Philadelphia 76ers will try to extend a two-game winning streak as they visit the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night.

Philadelphia (35-25) seems to be finding its rhythm without injured center Joel Embiid, having now won three of its last five in the NBA odds. While Brooklyn (24-37) looked to be fighting its way back into the play-in race with two straight wins over the Atlanta Hawks last week, the Nets lost ground on Monday with a loss to the Grizzlies.

The Sixers are the better team, and Brooklyn is playing the second game of a back-to-back tonight. We’ll discuss whether that’s enough for Philadelphia to cover in our free NBA picks and predictions for 76ers vs. Nets on Tuesday night.

76ers vs Nets odds

76ers vs Nets predictions

The Philadelphia 76ers aren’t the same team without Joel Embiid. However, it’s important for Philadelphia to find wins to put itself in a reasonable playoff position when its superstar comes back. Most importantly, the 76ers want to avoid the play-in tournament, a position they’re currently ahead of by a single game.

Without Embiid, the Sixers have gone just 6-8. However, they’re 5-4 in their last nine, showing that they can at least compete even with the injury. Philadelphia is still missing Embiid on defense, having allowed at least 114 points in each of their last four games. Luckily, Tyrese Maxey (26.0 points per game) has been able to pace the offense, scoring at least 24 points in each game since the All-Star Break.

If this offense can continue performing at that level with Maxey at the helm, the 76ers will win enough games — particularly against weaker opponents — to avoid a play-in game for the postseason. The Brooklyn Nets look to be exactly the kind of team they should be beating even now, especially with Brooklyn dealing with injury issues of its own.

The Nets have missed Cam Thomas (20.9 ppg) in each of their last four games, and he is once again listed as questionable with an ankle injury for tonight’s game. Brooklyn is 2-2 in those four games, but both wins came against Atlanta, and it has averaged just 105.3 ppg without Thomas in the lineup. That’s not a competitive number for an NBA team in 2024, and it doesn’t suggest that the Nets can take advantage of Embiid’s absence on the defensive end.

That’s important to note, as this is how the Nets managed to score a 136-121 win over Philadelphia in their last meeting. In that game on February 3, Thomas scored 40 points, and the Nets also had one of their most impressive offensive performances of the season overall, hitting 20 3-pointers and shooting 51.6% from the field — numbers they’d be unlikely to duplicate with Thomas healthy, let alone with him hobbled or out.

Outside of fluke performances such as that one, Brooklyn simply doesn’t have the tools to beat Philadelphia, even without Embiid on the court. The oddsmakers are giving the Nets a fair amount of respect tonight, largely because they are on their home court and get to play the 76ers at less than full strength.

However, that won’t be enough to keep this a close game tonight. I’m taking Philadelphia and laying the points on the road.

My best bet: 76ers -3 (-110 at FanDuel)

76ers vs Nets same-game parlay

76ers -3

Over 216

Tyrese Maxey 25+ points

Maxey will play a big part in ensuring Philadelphia scores enough to put the Nets away. That’s why I’m taking both the spread and the Over in my same-game parlay.

The 76ers have played to 216 points or more in each of their last four games, and the Nets have also hit this total in two of their last three. The Sixers should score enough points to bring the game Over the total.

I’ll also take Maxey to score at least 25 points tonight. While Maxey has only hit this total in three of his last six, he’s finished with exactly 24 points in the other three games and looks to have a favorable matchup tonight.

76ers vs Nets spread and Over/Under analysis

Philadelphia opened tonight’s game as a 2.5-point favorite over Brooklyn. The line has moved slightly in favor of the 76ers, with most books now listing Philadelphia -3 as their main line. There are even some sites moving to a 3.5-point spread, which could be of interest if you want to back the home team.

The Sixers have been solid against the spread this year, posting a 33-27 record against the spread. Brooklyn has been slightly underwater for bettors, going just 27-31-3 ATS on the season.

Even without Embiid on the court, the talent gap here is too wide for me to ignore. Philadelphia has the stronger roster, and any doubt over the status of Thomas only makes this an easier pick tonight. I’m backing the 76ers to win and cover the spread.

The total for this game opened at 217.5 points. That number has come down significantly, with the consensus Over/Under now sitting at just 215.5 points. You can find -110 on either side of that total, with some books offering -105 on the Over.

These teams have been mirror images of each other against the total this season. The Over holds a 32-27-1 advantage in Philadelphia’s games, while the Nets have seen the Under post a 33-27-1 record when they hit the court.

While the Nets tend to play some of the lowest-scoring games in the NBA, the 76ers have shown they can still score against anyone. Philadelphia has also been shakier on defense without Embiid, which has brought their totals up even further. Although there’s a wide range of outcomes on the total tonight based on which team controls the pace better, I’m leaning toward the Over.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
