The Orlando Magic held a narrow halftime lead in Sunday’s Game 1, but a big third quarter propelled the Boston Celtics to a comfortable 17-point victory at home. Can the Magic get back on track in the scoring department and keep things close in Game 2, or will Boston head to Kia Center up 2-0 after another convincing victory?
My Magic vs. Celtics predictions expect the visiting team to key in on offense and provide a better showing than it did in Game 1. Read my NBA picks to see how I’m betting the point total and which two props I’m targeting.
Who will win Magic vs Celtics Game 2?
While I expect the Orlando Magic to play better on offense in Game 2, the Boston Celtics simply have too much firepower. Even the Magic’s best game on offense won’t give it enough juice to hang with Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Boston’s myriad of scoring options. Boston gets the W and takes a 2-0 lead on Wednesday.
Magic vs Celtics prediction
My best bet: Over 199 (-110 at bet365)
The name of the game is offense for Orlando in Game 2. The Magic were limited to just 86 points in Game 1, and the team lost in blowout fashion to Boston after taking a 1-point lead into halftime.
Per usual, Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner did the heavy lifting on offense. Actually, they did all the lifting on offense. The dynamic pair combined for 59 points on 24 of 51 shooting. The rest of the team went 10 of 31 for just 27 points. Orlando’s remaining three starters scored a grand total of 10 points.
The Magic’s offense has been bad all season, but Sunday’s loss was a low point even for this team. Orlando averaged 105.4 points per game this season, including 104.8 on the road. The team scored at least 87 points in 76 games, and I don’t expect them to play this poorly on offense in Game 2.
Orlando’s coaching staff will surely make a concerted effort to get other guys involved, including Cole Anthony and Anthony Black, who played solid rotational minutes throughout the season and contributed microwave offense on and off the bench. The pair combined for just 24 minutes in Game 1, but I expect more playing time for both in Game 2.
The Magic hit the Over in 17 of 35 games as the underdog, including 13 of 22 as the road dog. Orlando finished with a game total of Over 199 in nine of its last 10 and 18 of its last 20 on the road. The team failed to clear this total just 21 times on the season.
The C’s finished with Over 199 points in 18 of their last 20 at home, and they failed to clear this line only nine times. Boston averaged 116.1 points per game overall and 116.6 at home.
The point total for Game 1 was 206, but oddsmakers have overreacted after the teams combined for just 189 points. I’d be crazy not to bet the Over on the ludicrously low 199 points for Game 2, and sports bettors agree, with 65% of the early action on the Over.
Magic vs Celtics same-game parlay
I’m betting on an offensive bounce-back from Orlando, and this team point total is juicy. The Magic averaged 105.4 points per game this season, and they scored at least 94 points in 65 games. The team scored at least that many in 20 of the final 25 games of the season.
Though the Magic posted a dud against the Celtics in Game 1, they scored 94 or more in all three regular-season meetings and have scored at least that many in each of the last nine regular-season tilts with Boston.
A boost on offense means role players will have to get involved, and that means some more minutes and touches for Black. Over the final month of the regular season, Black was the team’s leading scorer behind Banchero and Wagner, dropping 11.6 points per game and scoring at least seven in 10 of 13 appearances. He finished with 16 points in 28 minutes against the Hawks in the Play-In but logged only 14 minutes and scored three points in Game 1.
I expect him to be more involved in Game 2, so I’m taking the Over on his modest scoring line.
