My analysis
Luka Doncic demands the ball, but it will take time for coach J.J. Reddick and the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers lineup to really fold Luka into the offense.
In the meantime, Doncic can be a conduit for L.A. His scoring demands respect from defenders, and he’ll create a lot of “gravity” on the offensive end, freeing up space for his new teammates.
Doncic’s ability to find cutters and distribute will come naturally in these first few games with the team. I expect him to make a good first impression by sharing the basketball during this transition period.
The Utah Jazz could be the perfect opponent for Doncic to shake off the rust against.
The Jazz are dead last in defensive rating and allow the fifth-highest assist-to-FGM ratio in the league. Luka already had success against this defense as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, recording assist totals of eight and nine dimes in two matchups with Utah.
Player projections for Doncic all call for more than 7.5 assists, with most models forecasting eight or more helpers. My number comes out to 8.3 assists from the newest Laker, which should have Over 7.5 assists priced around -134.
However, bet365 is paying +105 on this prop after raising it from the opening number of 6.5 (Over -120).
