The Utah Jazz have been playing some inspired basketball of late, taking two of their last three over some quality competition, and they’ll look to continue the run of form against a slumping Phoenix Suns team on Friday night.
While the Jazz were active sellers at the trade deadline, our Jazz vs. Suns predictions will highlight why they should still have a fair chance to pick apart a Suns team which has had some glaring issues over what’s been a very middling last month of play.
Let’s dig into some NBA player props and hand out some NBA picks on Friday, February 7.
Jazz vs Suns prediction
My best bet
Jazz +8.5 (-115 at bet365)
My analysis
This should be a rather messy game between two defenses which have been among the worst in the league over the last two weeks, and on the opposite end of the floor there’s been some surprising promise out of this Utah Jazz team which could ultimately be the prevailing story.
Utah has been hampered by injury a ton this season, and will enter this one without two impact players in Collin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson who will join Taylor Hendricks on the sideline as well. It’s also traded away Drew Eubanks in recent days to further thin the depth up front.
That’s got this line heading squarely into the Phoenix Suns’ way here, even if Bradley Beal is questionable with an injury, but there’s enough to like here if you’re the visitors.
Rookie Isaiah Collier has done an excellent job in wake of the injury to Clarkson, helping the Jazz rise the ranks in Assist Rate and offensive rating in the last two weeks, and while he’s struggled to shoot the ball from outside like many of his teammates this is still a squad which ranks sixth in shooting from the mid-range and the rim over this span.
The Suns have been at their worst inside, and will face plenty of adversity against the size and physicality of Utah down low, and in giving up a ton of shots at the rim we should see a reasonable path to success for the visitors even if they’re shorthanded.
Utah, meanwhile, has graded out as a top-10 defense against the 3 over this span – and while it has fallen short of expectations inside the arc defensively the Suns continue to sit exactly in the middle of the league in efficiency as a team which relies so heavily upon scoring in the mid-range.
It’s the 3 that can jettison Phoenix into that top-10 territory on offense, but the 3 has not been easy to come by against this Jazz team. I think with an edge down low offensively, and on the boards, this young team can keep matters close with how flat the Suns have looked.
Jazz vs Suns same-game parlay
I’ll admit, this isn’t the dreamiest spot in the world for these young Jazz starters, but there’s no denying the volume for them over the last few games amidst plenty of injuries and trades.
Starting with Collier, I can’t look past this line on his points, rebounds and assists. He’s been locked in for 30 minutes with the first unit over the last seven games, returning 8.4 assists per game despite a pretty formidable strength of schedule. The Suns are actually doing a great job of preventing assisted baskets at the moment, but Collier’s Usage Rate has been quite high and he should also have a chance to pick apart the Suns at the rim, where he’s ranked just outside the top 20% of guards in shooting frequency.
Against the 10th-worst rim defense in the past two weeks, both Collier and Walker Kessler should convert on plenty of shots – and while the guard should collect plenty of boards against a team which has been anchored on the glass solely by Nick Richards, the big man should easily notch 10 boards even against the newly-acquired center.
Kessler’s been a rebounding machine, averaging 13.1 over his last seven games, and it’s directly coincided with a massive rise in playing time which brought him up near a season high last time out with 36 minutes of court time. He’ll keep logging heavy minutes, and with that he should find another double-double.
