Despite a combined 102 losses, the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets look set to finish outside the Top 5 in the race for lottery odds, but their young talent will get every chance to impress in this afternoon’s matchup.
Toronto has lost three in a row, but there’s healthy competition for next year’s roster, and my Raptors vs. Nets predictions expect the visitors — led by their emerging young wing — to outwork Brooklyn.
Check out my NBA picks for this April 6 clash between two teams ready to call time on tough seasons.
Raptors vs Nets prediction
My Raptors pick: Ja'Kobe Walter Over 12.5 points (-115 at PointsBet Canada)
My analysis
The Toronto Raptors will transition quickly from this losing year into win-now mode next season, and all these minutes for their young role players down the stretch could pay off as franchise expectations shift.
The ever-evolving pecking order among those young guns has been fascinating to watch. As well as Gradey Dick has played at times, and as steady as Jamal Shead has looked in the backup point guard role, the buzz around Ja’Kobe Walter is hard to ignore — and that’s where I’m looking for my best bet today.
Walter seized his chance for a bigger role in the offense against the Pistons on Friday, finishing with 22 points on 8-for-14 shooting, including four triples, and he could see a repeat of his 32-minute workload as the Raptors continue to prioritize rest for key starters.
Jakob Poeltl and Immanuel Quickley have been ruled out for this afternoon’s clash, while Scottie Barnes is listed as questionable with a finger issue. There’s no reason for the visitors to take any injury risks at this stage, which should keep the door open for Walter.
With 17+ points in three of his last four contests, Walter is enjoying one of the best patches of his rookie season, and his progress from downtown is an encouraging sign for Toronto. He’s knocked down 3+ 3-pointers in four of his past five games.
Volume shouldn’t be an issue for this Walter prop today, and I see him building on his eye-catching recent form.
Raptors vs Nets same-game parlay
The Raptors have essentially been a .500 team over the second half of the season, and they’ve been ATS darlings all year, posting a 46-31-1 ATS record. With the Nets losing four in a row at Barclays Center, I’m riding with the visitors and laying this small number.
D’Angelo Russell only played 13 minutes in Brooklyn’s loss to the Timberwolves on Thursday, and the hosts’ second-string options don’t offer the same offensive punch as R.J. Barrett backed by Walter, Shead, and Jamison Battle.
This still feels like a rock fight. Toronto has only hit the first-half Over in 28 of its last 70 games, and both teams are pushing backups into starring roles.
