The Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs face off at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas tonight.
The All-Star break provided Phoenix with much-needed rest, and with key players healthy for this clash, my Suns vs. Spurs predictions believe that will be the difference.
Here are my free NBA picks for this Western Conference showdown on February 20.
Suns vs Spurs prediction
My best bet
Suns -2 (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
The San Antonio Spurs were installed as three-point favorites yesterday afternoon. However, after Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, and Grayson Allen were confirmed as available and Victor Wembanyama was downgraded to doubtful, the line flipped to favor the Phoenix Suns at -2.
A five-point swing is a lot but it's more than justified in this case.
The Spurs have really struggled since the start of the new year, going just 5-13 straight up and against the spread in their last 18 games. Even after adding star guard De'Aaron Fox at the trade deadline, they went 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS.
The Suns have had a disappointing season, but they are 23-12 with Booker and Durant in the lineup, and with Beal also playing today, that's just gravy. With Wembanyama now ruled out for the season due to a blood clot, San Antonio won't be able to take advantage of the Suns' weakness at center.
Wembanyama is the best defensive player in the NBA thanks to his rim-protecting ability and he's also an elite scorer who averages 24.3 ppg. His absence combined with the presence of the Suns' Big 3 is enough for me to side with Phoenix on a short spread at a neutral court.
Suns vs Spurs same-game parlay
Devin Booker has eclipsed this number in 11 of his last 16 games and is averaging 29.4 ppg over that stretch. He also has a history of torching the Spurs, dropping at least 27 points in the last five meetings between these teams.
Stephon Castle has been on fire over the last month. The rookie has dropped 15+ points in 11 of his last 15 games and is averaging 18.1 ppg over that span.
With Wemby sidelined, Castle should see an uptick in his shot attempts against a Phoenix squad that ranks 25th in the league in defensive rating.
