Suns vs Thunder Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

With much speculation around Kevin Durant (who is listed as doubtful for tonight) through the looming NBA trade deadline, expect the Oklahoma City Thunder to have a field day over a Phoenix Suns team that is currently in complete disarray.

The Phoenix Suns and the Oklahoma City Thunder will face off at Paycom Center on Wednesday, with Devin Booker going head-to-head with NBA MVP favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Tipoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET, and the game will air on ESPN.

Kevin Durant has been tagged as doubtful for this matchup, as trade rumors begin to swirl around his name ahead of the NBA trade deadline on Thursday afternoon.

Find out what I’m backing in my NBA picks for Suns vs. Thunder predictions on Wednesday, February 5.

Suns vs Thunder prediction

My best bet
Thunder -12 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis
The Phoenix Suns are an absolute mess right now, with the NBA trade deadline approaching on Thursday afternoon. The Suns are dead set on acquiring Jimmy Butler to shake things up, but Bradley Beal has refused to waive his no-trade clause, forcing them to consider Plan B—which could involve trading Kevin Durant. It felt inconceivable that they would move Durant, but following back-to-back losses against the Portland Trail Blazers, it's clear that while this roster is very talented, it needs a shakeup. Speculation grew further when Durant was tagged as doubtful for Wednesday's game against the Thunder.

There are a ton of potential moving parts to this bet because Durant’s status is a big factor in the spread, and Jalen Williams is also questionable for the Oklahoma City Thunder. What draws me to this bet is that if you look at it from a worst-case scenario—where Durant plays for the Suns and Williams is out for the Thunder—a spread of -12 is a fair number. There's no real edge, but you're also not buying a bad number, and that’s your worst-case scenario.

Considering Durant is listed as doubtful, it seems very likely that he sits out on Thursday as the Suns’ front office continues to evaluate all options. If Durant is out, I like this spread closer to -15 for the Thunder, meaning you have a solid edge with this number trading at -12. Not to mention, if Williams also suits up for the Thunder, your probability gap will continue to grow.

It's hard to assign an exact price to this wager because we truly don't know who is in or out. But like I said earlier, even in a worst-case scenario, you're still comfortable laying 12 points on the Thunder.

The Luka Doncic trade was as dramatic as it gets for the NBA—but could you imagine if Durant ends up switching locker rooms on Wednesday night? The Thunder have the draft capital to make it happen, and his presence on their roster would completely push this team over the top.

Suns vs Thunder same-game parlay

Oklahoma City Thunder money line

Isaiah Hartenstein 15+ points

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 7+ assists

Obviously, I like the Thunder on Wednesday against the Suns, as my best bet is Thunder -12, but there are also two props that I really like for our SGP. Both the Isaiah Hartenstein and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander props are alternate overs.

The Suns have some of the worst production in the NBA from their center position, and they have tried to address it by trading for Nick Richards. While he's an upgrade, there's also a reason he was the backup center on the Charlotte Hornets. Hartenstein will be able to finish around the rim against the Suns, but the quality of shots he gets is also directly tied to his guards.

The Suns' perimeter defense is among the worst in the NBA. I mean, the best defenders in the league can't even contain Gilgeous-Alexander, so how on earth are the Suns going to slow him down? SGA is going to collapse this defense over and over, forcing the Suns to send extra help, which should open the door to easy dump-offs for Hartenstein.

I think you could see Gilgeous-Alexander and Hartenstein work in tandem on Wednesday in the pick-and-roll to absolutely shred this Suns defense, which is why I'm using two alternate overs for my SGP on their player props.

Suns vs Thunder spread and Over/Under analysis

  • The Thunder opened as 12.5-point favorites, and we have seen very little movement from the opener.
  • The injury report will determine how the spread moves throughout the day.
  • The total opened at 225 and has gained momentum toward the Over, now trading at 227.5.
  • Assuming Durant is out, I believe 227.5 is a very fair number for the total.
