The Portland Trail Blazers have suddenly encountered a rough patch after a scorching hot run over the last month or so, and now they’ll look to turn things around following a loss to the Denver Nuggets on Monday in a rematch in Colorado.
With injuries piling up for the visitors, our Trail Blazers vs. Nuggets predictions will highlight why we could be heading for a repeat of Monday’s no-contest.
Let’s dig into some NBA player props and hand out some NBA picks on Wednesday, February 12.
Trail Blazers vs Nuggets prediction
My best bet
Nuggets -10.5 (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
I’ve been a big believer in the Portland Trail Blazers of late. They’ve played exceptional defense over the last few weeks, but they may finally meet some resistance on Wednesday.
Portland’s defense was finally broken down by these same Denver Nuggets on Monday in a lopsided 147-117 win, with Denver continuing to match — and exceed — the Trail Blazers’ performance on that side of the ball while their scorching hot offense continues to do the job.
The key to the Trail Blazers’ success has come in the frontcourt, which entered the week ranked in the Top 10 at the rim and the short mid-range this month, but now they’re going to be without Deandre Ayton in this game with Jerami Grant and Robert Williams both listed as questionable.
Their 3-point defense continues to be superb — even in the loss to Denver — but now Scoot Henderson also finds himself injured which will further throw a wrench into their plans.
This is a very difficult proposition for Portland, which has cooled off with two losses in a row and now won’t have several key defensive pieces to keep this game in a manageable spot. If the Nuggets see some positive regression in the shooting numbers due to shooting variance, the injuries laid out above, or a combination of the two – this game has all the makings of another commanding win for the Nuggets.
Denver sits second in offensive efficiency this month, and for all the good the Trail Blazers have done on defense they continue to search for consistency on the opposite end of the floor with the 17th-best offense. Now, they’ll be without arguably their best offensive player in Ayton along with a scoring threat in Henderson.
We’ve already seen this team trending back down to Earth, and these injuries should continue to make life difficult.
Trail Blazers vs Nuggets same-game parlay
While we certainly project this game to be a favorable one for Denver, it would be irresponsible not to search for player props on Portland’s side of things given all the injuries mounting.
Donovan Clingan will be thrust into the spotlight once again with Ayton heading back to the sideline with an injury, and the best way we can bet on him here is in the blocks department. He’s averaged just over two blocks per game in his last four without Ayton, but this one could be even more fruitful given Denver’s emphasis on scoring inside.
The Nuggets rank 12th in shot frequency at the rim and ninth in the short mid-range this month as they continue to shy away from shooting the 3, which should give this large, expert defender the chance to once again have a huge night in this column.
Then, someone will need to score the ball against the Nuggets with all these players out and Deni Avdija should be the guy. The Nuggets have been pretty good against the 3 in recent weeks, though it’s technically their weakest spot on the floor, and on top of that they’re in the top 10 in terms of field goal attempts allowed in the mid-range.
These are the sweet spots for Avdija, and after a decent enough 16 points in the recent loss to Denver, I suspect he gets even more playing time and at least matches the 12 shots he put up on that night.
