How hot can Bobby Hurley’s seat get? This marks the fifth time in 10 seasons in Tempe that he’s lost 15 or more games. He’s an effective recruiter but an ineffective ball coach, and his team’s collapse this season is an all-too-familiar iteration of a woeful tenure.
The Arizona State Sun Devils are limping to the finish line, dropping eight of their last nine games. Three straight losses have come by double digits, inspiring little confidence heading into a rivalry game with the Arizona Wildcats.
The Sun Devils were down to just five members of their usual rotation last time out against Utah and it showed in a 73-99 loss. Two starters, Jayden Quaintance and Adam Miller, missed the game and can be considered questionable for Tuesday. That’s in addition to leading scorer BJ Freeman’s (13.7 ppg) continued absence after getting dismissed from the team.
On the slip side, one would think we see an inspired brand of basketball from Tommy Lloyd’s Wildcats. They’ve lost four of their last six games and need to gain some momentum heading into March. A get-right spot against a reeling rival comes at the perfect time.
Arizona is currently projected as a No. 4 seed (per Bracket Matrix). The Wildcats rank 13th overall on KenPom and are a talented, balanced team that forecasts as a National Championship contender on paper, ranking Top 20 in both offensive and defensive efficiency.
There’s no excuse for the Wildcats here as they seemingly hold the advantage at every spot in the lineup. They have a much deeper bench and are better coached, so the wide
Lloyd’s squad has dominated its “little brother”, winning four straight by an average margin of 22.8 points. The Wildcats are 9-6 ATS at the McKale Center and I’m betting on them rolling at home.

Arizona should score points in bunches in this matchup against a Sun Devils defense that just allowed 99 points to Utah and 91 points to BYU. The rim protection falls off a cliff without Quaintance, who's nearly twice as effective on the defensive end as any other Sun Devil (3.31 Defensive Bayesian Performance Rating, per Evan Miya). His status will be crucial if Hurley’s squad hopes to stop Arizona even a bit.
