The Duke Blue Devils open their ACC Tournament against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in this Thursday lunch session.
My Georgia Tech vs. Duke predictions expect the No. 1 team in the country to flex its offensive muscles and hang a big number today.
Read on for more college basketball picks for Thursday, March 13.
Who will win Georgia Tech vs Duke?
Duke.
What else is there to say about the Blue Devils? They have a great mix of upperclassmen paired with talented freshmen, including Wooden Award frontrunner Cooper Flagg.
For my money, it's currently the best team in the sport and comes into March hotter than almost any team in recent memory. Georgia Tech will be a minor annoyance today.
Georgia Tech vs Duke prediction
My best bet: Duke team total Over 82.5 (-125 at bet365)
My analysis
The lines for this game were quite sharp, at least according to my models. I projected a spread of -22 and a total of 147. While there is value in the Over according to those projections, that would require being dependent on Georgia Tech to do its part, and I'm not sure I want to do that.
We've heavily documented the offensive conditions in the Spectrum Center that have produced an Under in all but one of the tournament games that have ended in regulation. Pair that with the Yellow Jackets having to score against one of the best teams in the country, and you have a scary proposition.
However, I will take the value of the Duke team total. It should have no such issues scoring in an arena like this, having already played in many different environments this season.
I projected Duke to score right around 88 points in this match, which is a fairly significant edge compared to the current line.
The offensive advantages are various here. The Blue Devils didn't play well in the first matchup this season, but they saw Flagg get into foul trouble and still scored 82 points. They'll beat that number today.
One of the key areas where Duke has had success this season is on big cuts and rolls to the basket. It makes sense; Flagg is such a versatile player you can put him at the top of the four in these situations and initiate the offense. Then, after that, you have the behemoth 7-foot-2 Khaman Maluach to finish at the rim.
On such plays this season, the Blue Devils have dropped 1.24 points per possession, 99th percentile nationally. It also makes sense why Maluach had one of his highest-scoring games of the season earlier this year against Tech.
Georgia Tech has allowed above the national average in such sets this season. However, those issues worsen against the better teams on the schedule, and it allows over a point per possession.
When the Devils have gotten this part of their game going, they've put up their biggest numbers. Stanford had similar issues, and they scored 106 on the Cardinal. The same goes for Florida State and Illinois, where they scored 100 and 110.
There's a chance Duke puts up a massive number today, but I'll go with this route, which I see as the biggest edge.
Georgia Tech vs Duke same-game parlay (SGP)
Maluach's success today would follow a trend of his success in these situations. He scored 15 points against Georgia Tech in December, and while much has changed since then, his exploiting these mismatches hasn't.
Even most recently against Florida State — another team with issues defending big cuts and rolls — the big man scored 14 points. He should be able to eclipse this number with relative ease today.
