Jets vs Panthers Prediction, Picks & Odds for This Week’s NFL Preseason Game

With New York's deep rotational depth on defense, Ed Scimia is bullish on the Jets when they head to Charlotte to take on an inexperienced Panthers squad in Saturday's exhibition showdown.

After a contentious joint practice, the New York Jets will face off against the Carolina Panthers in a preseason showdown on Saturday night.

The Jets scored a 27-0 win over the Panthers in the preseason last year, but it is Carolina that comes into this game as the slight favorite in the NFL odds.

Regardless, my Jets vs. Panthers predictions break down why New York holds the edge in this exhibition clash. Let's get into it with our free NFL picks for August 17.

My analysis

Both teams come into Saturday’s game with more injuries than you’d normally expect in the preseason. Thursday’s joint practice between the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers led to several fights, along with plenty of physical and chippy play.

Still, we can assume that some players will be held out. The Jets aren’t going to risk Aaron Rodgers at his age, and the Panthers have made it clear that Bryce Young won’t be appearing in exhibition games.

Both teams will be turning to their backup quarterbacks to get reps, meaning we could see a lot of Tyrod Taylor for New York, and perhaps Andy Dalton for Carolina — though the Panthers may be more focused on the battle for their No. 3 quarterback position between Jack Plummer and Jake Luton.

As usual, the Jets will be tough on defense, even in the preseason. Not only does New York have more rotational depth on defense than almost any other NFL team, but it even has some players trying to make the roster who have already impressed.

That includes Jarrick Bernard-Converse, who looked like a shutdown corner against the Washington Commanders last weekend. Meanwhile, former elite prospect Leonard Taylor III is looking to nab a spot at defensive tackle.

The Jets will also be watching battles down the depth chart at wide receiver and running back. With Taylor likely to lead the offense for a significant portion of the game, that will give New York an edge in experience over a very young Panthers defense.

New York dominated this matchup last year, and there’s nothing that suggests a dramatic turnaround one year later. I’m taking the Jets to win outright.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
