It's almost Halloween and if you're looking for last-minute costume ideas, you might want to keep in mind that for an NFL quarterback, there is nothing more terrifying than a 270-pound behemoth trying to take your head off.
I hunt for those kinds of monsters as I dive into the NFL odds and find the best defensive player props to bet on. This week, that's headlined by one of the scariest defensive players in the league — Philadelphia's Haason Reddick.
Here are my favorite sack and tackle NFL picks when it comes to the latest Week 8 odds.
This week’s best sack and tackle props
- Josh Allen Over 0.75 sacks
- Mike Danna to record a sack - No
- Haason Reddick Over 0.75 sacks
- Josh Metellus Over 4.5 total tackles
- Zaire Franklin Over 5.5 solo tackles
Picks made on October 27 at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Best Week 8 sack picks
Jaguars vs Steelers: Josh Allen
Pittsburgh Steelers fans were pumped to see first-round rookie Broderick Jones slot in at left tackle in Weeks 5 and 6 without giving up a sack. They were less enthused when Dan Moore Jr. returned from injury in Week 7 and was given his job back at LT.
To be fair, Moore actually played well in that contest and had a season-best pass block grade of 76.6 versus the Rams according to Pro Football Focus. That said, Moore still has a pathetic pass-blocking grade of 27.0 for the year and one good game does not make a good player.
On Sunday, Moore will face off against Jacksonville Jaguars edge Josh Allen. Allen is an ultra-athletic outside linebacker who was taken with a Top-10 pick in 2019 and notched 10.5 sacks as a rookie.
Allen seemed to have hit a plateau over the last few years, but he's broken through this season and has seven sacks through seven games while posting a career-high pass rush grade of 85.0. Bet on Allen to go Over 0.75 sacks against the Steelers on Sunday.
Josh Allen Prop: Over 0.75 sacks (-110 at DraftKings)
Chiefs vs Broncos: Mike Danna
This is a play I'm not going to bet on until we know the status of Denver Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles, as the former first-rounder was limited in practice with a hip issue on Thursday. However, Bolles has been healthy for most of this year and if he's on track to play, he should be able to keep Kansas City Chiefs pass rusher Mike Danna in check.
Danna has racked up 4.5 sacks this year but the right end has a pass rush grade of just 58.0, which indicates that he's not consistently beating his man. He'll have an exceptionally tough time against Bolles, who didn't allow a single sack in 2020 but has been hindered by injuries over the last two years.
Bolles has played in every game so far this year and has allowed just one sack (back in Week 2) while posting an impressive pass-blocking grade of 81.1. It's also expected to be a cold and possibly afternoon in Denver on Sunday, which will likely result in the Broncos running the ball more and fewer dropbacks for Russell Wilson.
Mike Danna Prop: To record a sack - No (-130 at bet365)
Eagles vs Commanders: Haason Reddick
Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell has already been sacked an incredible 40 times through seven games. By comparison, only six QBs were sacked more than that in all of the 2022 season, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields eating dirt a league-high 55 times.
There are several reasons why the Commanders give up so many sacks, including poor offensive line play, how often they throw, and Howell's tendency to hold on to the ball too long. Regardless of the reasons, Howell should be in trouble against a Philadelphia Eagles stop unit that has no trouble wreaking havoc up front.
Philadelphia's top sack artists this year are Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat, who are tied for the team lead with 5.5 sacks apiece. Reddick had a career-high 16 sacks in his first season with the Eagles in 2022, which marked his third straight year with more than 10 sacks.
He surprisingly got off to an ice-cold start this year, failing to get a sack and mustering a total of eight pressures through the first three weeks of the year. However, Reddick is now back to terrorizing opposing QBs and has racked up 18 pressures and 5.5 sacks in the last four games.
That includes Week 4 against the Commanders when he notched a sack. Reddick has made a habit out of getting to Washington's QBs and has picked up at least a sack in his last five games against the team. With his ability to line up over the field, expect the star linebacker to find holes in this vulnerable offensive line and get to Howell.
Haason Reddick: Over 0.75 sacks (-115 at DraftKings)
Best Week 8 tackles picks
Vikings vs Packers: Josh Metellus
I missed on this play last week when I took the Over 5.5 on Josh Metellus' tackles and he ended up with exactly five total tackles. That was the fewest tackles that Metellus has logged in a game this season, with the Minnesota Vikings safety racking up at least six and averaging 7.0 per game through the first six weeks.
I'm convinced that it was still a smart bet and now we're getting an even lower number this week with the O/U ticking down to 4.5. Metellus has been one of Minnesota's best defenders and has logged more than 90% of defensive snaps.
With the Vikings ranking near the bottom of the league in time of possession, that means plenty of opportunities for Metellus to pile up numbers.
Josh Metellus Prop: Over 4.5 total tackles (-115 at bet365)
Saints vs Colts: Zaire Franklin
No player has been racking up tackles at a higher rate than Indianapolis Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin, as the former seven-round pick who leads the NFL in both total tackles (88) and solo tackles (58). The O/U for Franklin's solo tackles this week is set at 5.5 — a number he has eclipsed in every game this year.
In fact, Franklin has had at least seven solo tackles in six of seven contests and is coming off a game against the Browns where he racked up nine. This number should be set at 6.5 or 7.5, especially against an up-tempo New Orleans Saints offense that is third in the league in plays per game.
Zaire Franklin Prop: Over 5.5 solo tackles (-130 at DraftKings)
