The Montreal Canadiens continue their hunt for a playoff spot as they enter the weekend with a narrow two-point lead over the New York Rangers for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
If the Habs are going to improve their postseason chances tonight, they’ll need Nick Suzuki to continue producing.
That’s why Montreal’s captain is the focus of my Flyers vs Canadiens predictions and NHL picks for Saturday, April 5.
Canadiens vs Flyers prediction
My Canadiens pick: Nick Suzuki anytime goal (+165 at BET99)
My Canadiens analysis
The Montreal Canadiens rolled to their third straight win on Thursday night with a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins as Nick Suzuki led the way offensively with a goal and an assist.
The Habs captain has led by example during his club’s win streak with multiple points in each of his last three games and four total goals over that span, and I’ll be looking for him to extend his goal streak to four against the Philadelphia Flyers tonight.
The Flyers still sit at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, but they’ve shown a new level of fight since Brad Shaw took over for John Tortorella as head coach in late March. Philly is 3-0-0 under Shaw as the new bench boss started his tenure with a 6-4 win against the Canadiens last Thursday.
But despite their recent success, the Flyers still have a serious problem in net. Samuel Ersson will likely get the call in net and has not looked great between the pipes down the stretch. The Swede has allowed four or more goals in his last three starts and owns a brutal .815 SV% over that span.
It’s not just a cold spell, though — Ersson posted an inflated 4.30 GAA to go with an .833 SV% in March, giving up three or more goals in 10 of his last 11 games and four or more in seven of those contests.
Suzuki has accounted for four of Montreal’s last 11 goals and has found the back of the net in nine of his last 18 games, so I like his chances of staying hot vs. a struggling Flyers goaltender.
Canadiens vs Flyers same-game parlay (SGP)
Matvei Michkov has been a star for the Flyers all season, but the rookie has seemingly found a new spark under his new head coach. The 20-year-old has multiple points in three straight games and is riding a six-game point streak entering play.
The Flyers have improved, but the Canadiens should still take this game for two reasons:
- The Habs have more to play for in the midst of a playoff race.
- Montreal owns a significant edge in net.
Sam Montembeault is on a three-game win streak while holding the opposition to two goals or fewer in each game while carrying a .931 SV% over that span.
