The Montreal Canadiens are clinging to the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference despite dropping four straight. They’ll enter the second leg of a back-to-back road set against the Carolina Hurricanes tonight.

My Canadiens vs. Hurricanes predictions are calling for a busy night for Habs netminder Sam Montembeault. Find out more in my NHL picks for Friday, March 28.

Canadiens vs Hurricanes prediction

My Canadiens pick: Sam Montembeault Over 27.5 saves (-105 at BET99)

My Canadiens analysis
It’s been a rough stretch for Montreal Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault. He’s been on the hook for 16 goals across his past four starts and sports a nightmarish .866 SV% and 4.02 GAA during the skid.

The slump follows a sterling run in which he won six of seven out of the 4 Nations Face-Off and recorded an excellent .928 SV% and 1.96 GAA. Fortunately for bettors, Montembeault only needs to land between the two marks tonight to hit this Over, as the Carolina Hurricanes consistently put pucks on net.

Carolina paces the NHL in five-on-five shot attempts per 60 minutes and Corsi For percentage, and the Hurricanes also rank second in shots per game. Meanwhile, Montreal ranks 28th in CF% at 5-on-5 and has allowed an average of 34.7 shots over the past three games.

Expect Montembeault to be busy between the pipes tonight.

Canadiens vs Hurricanes same-game parlay (SGP)

Sam Montembeault Over 27.5 saves

Seth Jarvis Over 0.5 points

Jackson Blake Over 0.5 points

With Montreal reeling and playing a back-to-back road game and third on the highway in four nights, the Carolina offense is set up to have a solid showing. The Hurricanes have No. 1 center Sebastian Aho flanked by Jackson Blake and Seth Jarvis, and the trio have been a force at 5-on-5 with a 62.7 CF% and 68.8 expected goals percentage.

Blake and Jarvis are also skating on the No. 1 power-play unit, and Montreal has averaged the most shorthanded time per game (5:11). The Habs have taken the eighth-most minor penalties at 5-on-5, so there should be multiple power-play opportunities for Carolina.
