Things have not gone well for the Montreal Canadiens lately, but they started the stretch run off on a positive note, earning a 5-2 win over Ottawa.
Cole Caufield was a big factor in that game, and my Hurricanes vs. Canadiens predictions expect the star offensive winger to be front and center again.
Let’s break things down further with my NHL picks for February 25.
Canadiens vs Hurricanes prediction
My Canadiens pick
Cole Caufield Over 0.5 points (-140 at BET99)
My Canadiens analysis
Cole Caufield is having a monster season for the Montreal Canadiens. He's piled up 27 goals and 50 points through 57 games, leaving him just one goal shy of his previous high while putting him on pace to set a new career best in total points.
The Carolina Hurricanes have not been as stingy as usual of late. They rank 21st in 5-on-5 goals against over the past 10 games and gave up a six-pack of goals to Toronto in their first game out of the break.
Caufield is coming off a pair of rest days, and he’s fared extremely well in such situations over the past season and a half.
Caufield recorded a point in 67% of games last season following a few recharge days. He's kicked things up a notch further this season, recording 11 points over his previous 10 games when working off two days rest — hitting the scoresheet in eight.
The Canadiens and Caufield also seem due for a little puck luck. They’ve scored just 23 goals spanning the last 10 despite generating more than 28 expected goals.
Only Lane Hutson has been on for more Montreal shots over that span, so Caufield is a primary beneficiary when the team starts to convert on more of its opportunities.
Perhaps facing a team that has gotten .880 goaltending over its last five games is just what the doctor ordered for the tide to turn.
Canadiens vs Hurricanes same-game parlay (SGP)
Caufield and Suzuki are like movie night and buttery popcorn: You can’t have one without the other.
Caufield has recorded a point in 65% of Montreal’s games, while Suzuki has a hit rate of 61%. Zooming in, both have 60% hit rates over the past 20 games. That is no coincidence.
The two have great chemistry and share the ice nearly every shift as they play on the same line at 5-on-5 and the top power-play unit. If one picks up a point, there’s a good chance the other is involved.
Mikko Rantanen has generated 3+ shots in six of his past eight games and has predictably seen a spike in shot volume playing with Sebastian Aho rather than Nathan MacKinnon.
Rantanen has scored only once with the Hurricanes and is too good to remain as quiet as he has. Look for him to have plenty of shooting opportunities against a Canadiens team giving up the third-most shots to wingers over the last 10.
