Canucks vs Blues Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

The Canucks and Blues have played in a ton of low-scoring games this season, and our NHL picks expect more of the same when they face off tonight.

The Vancouver Canucks picked up an impressive 2-1 victory over the powerhouse Washington Capitals last time out.

My Canucks vs. Blues predictions see the road team looking to build on their strong defensive play and bottle up that formula against a struggling St. Louis side.

Let’s break things down further with my January 27 NHL picks.

Canucks vs Blues prediction

My Canucks pick
Under 5.5 (-128 at Pinnacle)

My Canucks analysis
The Vancouver Canucks have played in a lot of low-scoring games of late, as just three of their past nine games have gone Over the number. Defensively, they’ve largely played well. They have held opponents to 2.24 expected goals per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play, which is the fourth-lowest rate in the NHL.

Rick Tocchet always wants his team to play a tight, structured brand of hockey, but it’s even more of a necessity right now. The Canucks are struggling to generate much offense, sitting 28th in expected goals generated per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play the past 10 games.

They recently put their lines in a blender in search of jumpstarting the offense and it has yet to lead to results. Simply put, they’re not creating many chances or conceding them. The Canucks are playing a very low-event style, which is favorable to Unders.

The St. Louis Blues have been a strong Under team all season long. The Over has cashed in just 19 of 50 Blues games this year, a 38% clip. There have been a few pushes along the way but this team just hasn’t played in a lot of high-scoring contests.

Their 5-on-5 profile is very similar to Vancouver’s in that not much has happened at either end of the rink. They rank 23rd in high-danger chance rate the past 10 games. They also sit fifth when it comes to limiting Grade A opportunities.

Shots and chances should be hard to come by for both teams. That was the case in the two previous meetings this season; neither game eclipsed 50 total shots. If the goaltending is passable, there shouldn’t be much offense in this game.

Canucks vs Blues odds analysis

There was some movement toward the Canucks after opening, with their line trading as low as +101 before we saw a buyback on the Blues that pushed the Canucks up to +106. Neither team has won even five of their past 10 games so it’s not surprising we haven’t seen the market take a strong stance on either side.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the line shifts a little bit in Vancouver’s direction if Kevin Lankinen gets the nod in goal following a win in his previous start. He has pretty clearly out-performed Thatcher Demko, who has not looked himself since returning from injury.

Nobody seems to trust the offense in this game. The Under of 5.5 opened at -122 and has shifted six cents further.
